Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel will not bench quarterback Tua Tagovailoa ... for now. A day after admitting all options were on the table, McDaniel announced Tagovailoa will remain the team's starter in Week 8.
McDaniel was immediately asked about the situation at his Monday press conference. While he announced Tagovailoa would remain the Dolphins' starter, that comes with a couple of caveats.
When asked whether Tagovailoa would continue to be the team's starter for the next several weeks barring an injury, here's how McDaniel answered:
"He's going to take the snaps this week and he's going to be our starter [in Week 8]," McDaniel said. "And my expectation is that we don't throw 10 picks."
With that answer, McDaniel made it clear Tagovailoa would start in Week 8, but the head coach didn't commit to anything beyond that. Additionally, the point about interceptions makes it sound like McDaniel is frustrated with his quarterback's turnovers. The reporter who asked the question mentioned Tagovailoa leads the league in interceptions, though did not ask McDaniel for his expectations for Tagovailoa. McDaniel added that part himself.
Tagovailoa turned in a dreadful performance against the Cleveland Browns in Week 7. The 27-year-old completed 12-of-23 passes for 100 yards in the 31-6 loss. He did not throw any touchdowns and added three interceptions. On the season, Tagovailoa has thrown 11 touchdowns against a league-leading 10 interceptions in seven games.
With the game out of hand late, McDaniel turned to rookie Quinn Ewers, who was promoted into the backup job ahead of Week 7. Ewers completed 5-of-8 passes for 58 yards in the loss.
McDaniel said Monday he's not sure whether Ewers or Zach Wilson will be Tagovailoa's backup moving forward. The head coach said Ewers and Wilson would compete for that role every week and that spot could change, depending on how those players perform in practice.
Their time could come fairly soon. While McDaniel will stick with Tagovailoa against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 8, the coach didn't want to commit to much more than that. With McDaniel on the hot seat, the coach needs to start winning games if he wants to salvage the season and keep his job.
If McDaniel can't do that with Tagovailoa in the starting role, he could turn to another option in an effort to give the Dolphins a much-needed spark down the stretch.
