Calling all skywatchers and moon gazers! On Oct. 6, a supermoon will rise bigger and brighter, casting an eerie glow that makes the night feel straight out of a Halloween legend.
This month's full moon is referred to as the Harvest Moon because it is prime time for fall harvesting of cultivated crops, nuts and late fruits, according to the Farmers' Almanac. Depending on the region, various crops are harvested at different times, resulting in alternative harvest-related names.
Rising near the autumnal equinox, farmers would work under the light of the harvest moon to bring in the last of summer's bounty.
In addition to its astrological influence — reaching its peak in the sign of Aries — October's supermoon will also be a mystical spectacle. This is partly due to the fact that it will be slightly closer to Earth during its orbit.
So whether you're stepping outside to soak in its magical glow or snapping photos of the moon in all its glory, this is a moment you don't want to miss.Read on for everything you about October's breathtaking and bewitching supermoon.

A supermoon shines
A full moon becomes a supermoon when it reaches its peak while orbiting closest to Earth, a point called perigee, as per NASA. That extra proximity makes it appear slightly larger and brighter than an ordinary full moon, giving the night sky a more dramatic glow.
The moon isn't just full this time around, as it is leaning all the way in. Sitting at its closest point to Earth, Luna swells a little larger and glows a little louder, reminding us who the real main character is.

October's full moon will shine at its brightest late on Oct. 6 (11:48 p.m. ET), when it sits opposite the sun and reflects its light in full.
If you're in the U.S., it's best to look east around sunset on Oct. 6. That's when the moon rises above the horizon, appearing extra grand thanks to the "moon illusion," tricking our brain to make it seem larger near the skyline than high overhead.
In the hour after moonrise, don't be surprised if the moon takes on a golden or pumpkin-colored tint, a visual treat as Earth's atmosphere scatters cooler light, letting warmer hues pass through, per Space.com.
When is the next supermoon?
The next supermoon is the Beaver Moon, which occurs on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025. This will be the closest and largest supermoon of the year.
