Actor William Shatner, 94, arguably best known for his portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk in theStar Trek franchise, is opening up about a time he was nearly arrested.
During a September 2025 interview with On The Red Carpet, Shatner said that he was "almost arrested" after being pulled over by police officers when he was touring in the Midwest.
"I'm in the Midwest. I'm touring. I got to get from that city to that city. And it's 400 miles. The curtain comes down [of my show] at 11 o'clock. I jump in the car. And I drive, through the night. And suddenly, there's a cop behind me. I pull over, oh my god, [I'm going] 100 miles an hour. That's a felony. I'm going to jail," recalled Shatner during the interview.
Shatner said, however, that he wasn't arrested because the police officers recognized him and seemed to be in awe of his celebrity.
"So a cop comes in, takes my license. I come into the police car. 'Oh my god.' So he goes in, and I go to the passenger seat. And I open the door to the passenger seat. The light comes on, and he goes, 'No s--t, it's Shatner.' All right, go on. Three times, three different policemen, [say] 'No s--t, Shatner,'" said Shatner with a laugh in the On The Red Carpet interview.
William Shatner Shared His Thoughts About the Legacy of 'Star Trek: The Original Series'
Shatner first appeared as Captain Kirk during the first season of Star Trek: The Original Series, which premiered in 1966, per IMDb. The show had a three-season run until 1969. Shatner reprised his iconic character in several Star Trek movies, including 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, which premiered in 1984, 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), and 1994's Star Trek: Generations, as reported by IMDb.
Shatner shared his thoughts about fans' long-lasting devotion to the Star Trek franchise in a May 2024 interview with WXYZ-TV Detroit. According to Shatner, he and his Star Trek: TOS castmates didn't know that the show would become iconic.
"Nobody had any idea that this mediocrely popular show, [which] finally got canceled after three years, reconstitutes itself. And becomes a show business phenomena, the likes of which have never been seen," said Shatner in the interview.
