Valastro got right back to work after his surgery was a success

Buddy Valastro has completed his final hand surgery following a 2020 injury.

In a video shared on his Instagram on Thursday, Oct. 16, the chef, 48, opened up about preparing for his final surgery to fix his right hand after it was impaled with a metal rod while he was fixing a malfunction with his home bowling alley's pinsetter years ago.

"Today is my last day of work before I get my fifth and final hand surgery," the Cake Boss star told his followers.

"I got a lot of my strength back. I feel good. I can decorate, I can do anything," Valastro continued, then showing how his fingers now rest separately when he holds them up.

According to the TLC star, the tendon on his hand healed on the opposite side of the knuckle, causing his fingers to lean right.

"I'm kinda like [Spock] and I don't wanna be," Valastro added, then joking: "The only problem out of my whole surgery is — it's hard for me to give the middle finger. No more on this side."

In his caption, Valastro gave a "big thanks" to medical staff "for helping me finish strong."

A day later, he shared an update after his procedure was completed — and documented how he was already back to work in the kitchen.

As his daughter Sofia was filming, the chef showed off his "freshly bandaged hand" as he decorated a cake for his 24th wedding anniversary with wife Lisa Valastro.

"I wanted mom to know that even though I had hand surgery on our anniversary, I still did something for her," he joked in the clip.

"Thank you all for the kind messages and support you have sent me this week ❤️," Valastro added in the caption. "If I haven't responded please forgive me, I only got one hand! I want to thank Doctor Carlson and everyone at [Hospital for Special Surgery] again for taking such good care of me. A surgery slowing me down??? Fuggetaboutit!!"

After crushing his hand in a gruesome accident at his home bowling alley, the TV star had five reconstructive hand surgeries, one of which he underwent just a month before filming started for season three of his Food Network competition series with Duff Goldman, Buddy vs. Duff.

"You can't even imagine how bad it was. I feel very lucky that I'm able to do what I can do, especially it's my dominant hand. So knock on wood, I feel like we're in a good spot," he said in a 2023 PEOPLE interview.

"Before [the surgery], I really couldn't do nothing," he said a year prior. "I couldn't do cakes. I really couldn't squeeze a bag. My fingers were so stiff, I couldn't even bend them."

"It was one of those things where it shows you how important family is," Valastro added. "We take for granted the little things like you opening the door or just doing something with your hand. It makes you appreciate the little things so much."
