NBC's long-running procedural Chicago P.D. is heading into its 13th season.

Over the years, the series has said goodbye to fan-favorite cast members like Sophia Bush and Jon Seda.

Jason Beghe, Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati, and LaRoyce Hawkins are the only original stars still on the show.

After 12 seasons and more than a decade on air, Chicago P.D. continues to evolve, especially when it comes to the faces behind the badges.

While stalwarts like Jason Beghe, Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati, and LaRoyce Hawkins have remained on the front lines, others, like Sophia Bush and Jon Seda, have moved on.

With season 13 gearing up for patrol, Entertainment Weekly is looking back at the show's departed cast members — why they left and what they've been up to since.

In the earliest days of Chicago P.D., Archie Kao helped lead the cast as Detective Sheldon Jin. The squad's communications specialist, Kao's Sheldon is murdered by Internal Affairs sergeant Edwin Stillwell (Ian Bohen) in the season 1 finale, "A Beautiful Friendship."

According to then-showrunner Matt Olmstead, the writers wanted a jaw-dropping moment that showed "the ramifications of that police work and that unit and street level and no one's guaranteed anything." Sheldon's death was meant to set the tone for just how serious things could get in the world of Chicago P.D.

Since leaving Chicago P.D., Kao appeared in Michael Mann's Blackhat (2015) and a handful of Chinese films, including Provoking Laughter (2016) and Legend of the Ancient Sword (2017). The actor also landed leading roles on shows like My Dear Boy (2017), Rabbit Hole (2023), and Interior Chinatown (2024).

During Chicago P.D.'s first four seasons, Sophia Bush starred as Detective Erin Lindsay. Toward the end of season 4, Erin leaves to join the FBI in New York.

Bush discussed her exit during a 2018 appearance on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, revealing she quit the show due to harsh working conditions and "a consistent onslaught barrage of abusive behavior." She opened up more about her experience on set during a 2023 episode of her Drama Queens podcast, which she co-hosts with actresses Hilarie Burton and Bethany Joy Lenz.

The actress said she stayed as long as she did out of loyalty to the crew but eventually had to threaten legal action to get out of her contract.

In addition to hosting Drama Queens, a One Tree Hill rewatch podcast, Bush has spent her post-P.D. years acting in projects like The Incredibles 2 (2018), Love, Victor (2020–2022), Good Sam (2022), and Grey's Anatomy (2024–2025).

Elias Koteas as Alvin Olinksy in 'Chicago P.D.' season 1; Elias Koteas attends a premiere party for NBC's One Chicago on Nov. 9, 2015 in Chicago

Elias Koteas portrayed Detective Alvin Olinsky for the first five seasons of Chicago P.D. A close friend of Beghe's Sergeant Hank Voight, Alvin is arrested for the murder of the man who killed Hank's son. He's stabbed to death by a prison inmate in the season 5 finale, but returns in the season 11 finale in a hallucination seen by Hank.

Alvin's death wasn't Koteas' decision. Executive producer Rick Eid told EW that it came from wanting to "dramatize" the Voight–Olinsky storyline and give it an "honest conclusion."

"It was an interesting way for Olinsky to exit. We kept talking about him. He'd be dying on the mantle of his own loyalty," Eid said. "Ultimately, the final decision is just really hard because everybody loves Elias, and he's a great actor and a great person."

Since departing the One Chicago universe, the veteran actor has appeared on the shows Goliath (2021) and Guilty Party (2021), as well as the films The Baker (2022), Janet Planet (2023), and The Silent Planet (2024).

Jon Seda played Detective Antonio Dawson, whose battle with addiction in later seasons leads him down a dark path. In the season 7 premiere, it's revealed that Antonio is back in rehab after a relapse. A few episodes later, fans learned that he officially resigned and moved to Puerto Rico to be with his family.

It's been an honor portraying Det. Antonio Dawson in the #OneChicago world. To my cast #Family, I'll always treasure the time and stories we shared. To all you #chihards out there, THANK YOU for being the best of fans! We'll Always have CHICAGO 👊🏻 pic.twitter.com/pJRwphtMAu

Seda reacted to his exit in April 2019, posting on X that it was an "honor" to play Antonio and thanking fans for their support. Deadline later reported that the writers felt his storyline had naturally run its course.

Post-Chicago P.D., Sedas starred on NBC's sci-fi drama La Brea (2021–2024).

Jesse Lee Soffer is one of Chicago P.D.'s longest-running cast members, having played Detective Jay Halstead for 10 seasons. After marrying fellow detective Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and stepping up as Hank's right-hand man, Jay is sent to Bolivia to assist the army with taking down a cartel. In season 11, we learn that Jay and Hailey got divorced.

Soffer confirmed it was his choice to leave, telling Variety that it was "one of the toughest decisions" he's ever made in his life. "I really wanted to grow and expand," he explained. "If I signed up again, it would have been for another three years. I would have turned 40 on the show. I thought, 'You know what? It's time to take a risk.'"

Soffer returned to Chicago P.D. as a director, and later took a leading role on CBS's FBI: International during its fourth season, though the show was canceled in March 2025.

Brian Geraghty joined Chicago P.D. in season 2 as Officer Sean Roman. After being injured on the job, Roman leaves the CPD for a fresh start in San Diego. He returned in 2020 for a season 7 One Chicago crossover episode, in which he aims to find his missing sister.

At the time, executive producer Matt Olmstead told TVLine that Geraghty left to explore other opportunities. "It was the most civil, level-headed, mutual fan-fest agreement and departure that I've ever been a part of," he said.

Since then, you may have seen Geraghty on Big Sky (2020–2022), Gaslit (2022), and the Yellowstone prequel 1923 (2022–2025).

After recurring as Detective Hailey Upton in season 4, Tracey Spiradakos was promoted to the main cast for Chicago P.D.'s fifth season. In seasons 10 and 11, Hailey endures many intense situations, including a painful divorce and a brush with a serial killer. By the end of season 11, she decides to leave the CPD and begin a new chapter in her life.

Like many of her costars, Spiridakos left the series to pursue other projects. "I was just wanting to switch it up and kind of see what else was out there," she told NBC in May 2024. She's already lined up a few projects, including a lead role on the USA series Anna Pigeon.

Lisseth Chavez joined Chicago P.D. in season 7 as Officer Vanessa Rojas, a rookie brought in to replace Antonio. She left after one season, and her exit was never explained on the show. "We tried to address it in the [season 8] premiere, but it felt forced," Eid told TVLine in November 2020.

Chavez pivoted to playing Spooner on seasons 6 and 7 of The CW's Legends of Tomorrow (2021–2022). Currently, she stars as Officer Celina Juarez on ABC's The Rookie (2022−present).
