Kevin Federline claims Britney Spears once slapped him following an argument over weed

Spears has slammed Federline's forthcoming memoir, criticizing him for trying to "profit off my pain"

His book, You Thought You Knew, is out Oct. 21

Kevin Federline is reflecting on a pivotal moment in his marriage to Britney Spears that rocked their foundation for good.

Federline, 47, wrote in his memoir You Thought You Knew about a day in which he and Spears, 43, got into an argument over his smoking weed, and she allegedly slapped him while holding their young son.

The former dancer — who was married to Spears from 2004 to 2007 — wrote that he was in the studio working on his music when a friend showed up to drop off an ounce of weed, something he says was relatively common.

"It had never been an issue before," he wrote. "But that day it was like something snapped."

Federline wrote that Spears was "furious," and fired the pair's entire security team, which surprised him, as he said the pop star knew he smoked weed, and had even occasionally done it with him. Still, things only escalated from there.

Federline writes that he went to their bedroom to calm down, and Spears followed, yelling at him while holding their son Sean Preston, now 20 (The pair are also parents to son Jayden James, 19).

"I wasn't hiding anything. She knew who I was. She married me knowing it. But she was on the warpath, shouting her head off," he wrote. "Then she slapped me. Right in the face. With our son in her arms."

Federline wrote that after the incident, he started "pulling back" from the entire situation, and felt like a stranger in his own home. He wrote that "something broke that day," and he and Spears "were never the same after."

While Spears did not address the alleged slapping incident in her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, she did express her dislike for weed, which she said she often smelled in Federline's studio.

"I couldn't stand being around pot smoke," she wrote. "Even the smell of it nauseated me."

Federline's memoir is due out on Oct. 21, though multiple excerpts have been shared this week. In response, Spears spoke out against the book in two social media posts.

In her first post on Oct. 15, she called out Federline for "constantly gaslighting" her, and defended her relationship with her sons, who she said she's "almost begged" to be a part of her life.

"Trust me, those white lies in that book, they are going straight to the bank and I am the only one who genuinely gets hurt here," she wrote.

The star added that she'll "always love" her sons, and has "had enough" of the negative stories about her.

In a second post, she slammed Federline for releasing the memoir in order to "profit off my pain."

"If you really love someone then you don't help them by humiliating them," she wrote. "What scared me was how serious and angry he got, people have no idea, it is way worse than anyone could imagine."

A rep for the star previously told PEOPLE: "Once again he and others are profiting off her and sadly it comes after child support has ended with Kevin. All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoir."
