"Of course I've moved past it," George Lucas said of the Star Wars franchise in a new interview

"I'm building a museum. A museum is harder than making movies," he said

George Lucas has moved well beyond Star Wars 13 years after selling the franchise to Disney in 2012.

When Lucas, 81, and his wife Mellody Hobson spoke with WSJ. Magazine's for the outlet's Innovators issue published Thursday, Oct. 16, Lucas spoke briefly about Star Wars as they discussed the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, which is set to open next year.

"Disney took it over and they gave it their vision. That's what happens," Lucas told the outlet, when asked if he has "let go" of the franchise after decades of shepherding fans through stories a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away.

"Of course I've moved past it. I mean, I've got a life," Lucas added. "I'm building a museum. A museum is harder than making movies."

Lucas sold his company Lucasfilm and the rights to produce Star Wars movies to Disney back in October 2012 for a whopping $4.05 billion. In the intervening years, Disney has produced several new Star Wars movies and an ever-expanding number of television series for the Disney+ streaming service. The franchise returns to the big screen for the first time since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker with next year's The Mandalorian and Grogu.

As WSJ. Magazine reported, one inaugural exhibit in Lucas' new museum will feature designs for various vehicles seen in the Star Wars franchise.

"It's one gallery out of 33. And I did it grudgingly," Lucas told the outlet with a laugh. "I didn't want people to come to the museum and say, 'Where's the Star Wars?' "

Lucas has been married to Hobson, a businesswoman who is the co-CEO of the Chicago-based money management company Ariel Investments, since 2013. They share daughter Everest, whom they welcomed in 2012. Lucas is also a father to daughters Amanda, 44, and Katie, 37, as well as son Jeff, 32.

The couple broke ground on their new museum in 2018. In July, Lucas himself made his first-ever appearance at Comic-Con, where he said the museum "is sort of a temple to the people's art."

The museum's official website states that Lucas and Hobson have "assembled a collection that includes everything from American art to popular illustrative, comic, cinematic and animation art, to contemporary African American works," for the museum's 11-acre campus.
