Ethan Hawke recalled the "good advice" he gave him in an interview with the AARP
The legendary actor's advice include an unexpected style tip
Robert Redford inspired Ethan Hawke's career in more ways than one.
In an interview with the AARP published on Thursday, Oct. 16, Hawke, 54, named Redford as one of the few people who have offered him "good advice" throughout his career, along with Peter Weir, Robin Williams, Olympia Dukakis and Denzel Washington.
Redford, remembered as an actor, director, and founder of the Sundance Film Festival, died at the age of 89 in his Utah home on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Hawke told the AARP that the last time the two saw each other, Redford "told me to stop wearing cowboy hats because people will think I'm losing my hair."
While he thought the advice was "really funny," Hawke said that he appreciated Redford for always trying to look out for him.
"He was very helpful and kind to me when I was younger, too," said Hawke. "He was the first real champion of Before Sunrise. A lot of people weren't interested in that movie when it first came out. And he made us the opening night of the Sundance Film Festival [1995] and he introduced the film, made it seem like it was a real proper movie."

Hawke, however, has never been afraid to experiment with his look, and told the AARP that he ultimately "did not" listen to Redford's style advice.
"Like I said, unasked-for advice is never listened to," he told the AARP.
As fans recall, Hawke recently underwent a physical transformation for his portrayal of Broadway legend Lorenz Hart in the new Richard Linklater film Blue Moon. To get into character for the role, the actor shaved his head, replacing his locks with a combover, and adjusted his posture to appear nearly a foot shorter. He also wore brown contact lenses for the role.
Shaving his head was the easy part, because it "wasn't too time-consuming," the actor said at the PEOPLE/EW and Shutterstock Studio during the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, Sept. 8.

From there, it was all about "establishing the look, figuring out how the clothes fit, and how to walk, and working on the stagecraft of how to make me basically a foot shorter," Hawke said. "So it was nonstop."
The actor, however, noted that he hopes it's the last time he has to transform his body for an onscreen role, confessing, "Hopefully never again!"
