The decade of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen-led films from the '90s to the early aughts gave us more than several films involving switcheroos and worldwide double trouble; it gave American movie lovers Jason Clarke.

The Australian actor recently revisited the film that launched his career in the U.S. — 2000's *Our Lips Are Sealed* — during an appearance on SiriusXM's *The Julia Cunningham Show*. Clarke played villain henchmen Mac in the film partly set and filmed in Sydney, Australia.

When asked what his takeaway from the film was, Clarke quipped that it wasn't much "apart from I was young and needed the money."

More seriously, the actor admitted that the film had been his "first experience of an American production coming to Australia."

He added, "I'm incredibly grateful for it. It gave me probably, you know, more money than you could be getting paid in Australia. So that money, [I] used it to come to America, you know? So these little things, they just, they tick over in different ways."

Despite it being nearly 25 years since the film premiered, Clarke said that he still gets fans referencing the movie when coming up to him. "It's surprising how many people know that movie because, I'll be standing there thinking, you know, somebody's coming like, 'Oh my god, I loved you.' And I'm thinking [they're] about to say, *Zero Dark Thirty* or maybe *Chappaquiddick.* [But no, it's] *Our Lips Are Sealed*," he shared.

Clarke has gone on to become a veteran of numerous award-winning films, from *Zero Dark Thirty* (2012) and *The Great Gatsby* (2013) to *Mudbound* (2017) and *Oppenheimer *(2023). **

He's also made a name for himself with his memorable TV roles, including on *Brotherhood* (2006–2008) and *Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty* (2022–2023), on which he played Los Angeles Lakers legend Jerry West.

Most recently, Clarke has taken on the role of South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh for the limited series following the real-life Murdaugh family scandal inspired by Mandy Matney's popular *Murdaugh Murders Podcast*.

*Murdaugh: Death in the Family*, airing on Hulu, delves into the downfall of Alex Murdaugh (Clarke), who was convicted of murdering his wife, Maggie (Patricia Arquette), and their youngest son, Paul (Johnny Berchtold). The murders followed a deadly boat crash that led to the unearthing of multiple scandals involving the wealthy family, one of the state's most formidable legal dynasties.**

The real Alex is currently serving two life sentences without parole for the murders.

Co-creator and showrunner Michael D. Fuller previously told * *that he grew up "about an hour away" from where the powerful Murdaugh family lived, so he "felt a sense of duty and responsibility" to have the miniseries stick pretty closely to the true story, with only minor adjustments to help the narrative flow.

"These are very recent events, and the people who have survived this story or who were directly impacted by this story are still, for the most part, very much alive," Fuller said. "We made sure we're approaching everything with that consideration, that these are or were human beings, who now have surviving family members, and that extends to the Murdaughs themselves, and wanting to understand their story as much as we could."

As for Clarke, he described Alex as "a larger-than-life figure" during an appearance on *Good Morning America*, adding that the disgraced lawyer had something "magnetic about him that really allowed people to not see coming what came."
