"Golden Bachelor" Contestant Dishes on the Vibe Inside the Mansion
If you've been keeping up with The Golden Bachelor, then you remember Gerri Flowers, the 64-year-old home care agency CEO from Rockville, Maryland. Gerri made a memorable impression when she arrived on our screens (and out of the limo) sporting a nurse's hat as a nod to her profession. In fact, she caught Mel Owens's eye so much that she won the coveted first impression rose.
Unfortunately, Gerri has since been eliminated from the show, but we caught up with her to see how she's been doing since leaving the Bachelor mansion and what she thought about fellow contestant Nicolle's controversial remarks.
Katie Couric Media: What was it like the first night in the mansion, getting the first impression rose?
Gerri Flowers: It was unbelievable. There are not enough adjectives to tell you how I felt. I have two daughters who got engaged six months apart. They were both surprised by their engagements, and I wondered how they felt. Well, that's how I felt that night. It was magical and so unexpected. I didn't go out there to get the first impression rose. My intent was to do something for me, have some fun, and maybe fall in love.
What did your kids say when they saw you on the show?
First of all, I didn't tell them until two weeks before I was going. I didn't tell them that I got the first impression rose, and when my middle daughter, Amber, saw it on TV, she started crying and running around the room like a crazy woman. She's not a crier — she's cried maybe three times in her life. They were all so happy for me.
Disney/John FleenorHow do you feel having had this experience?
It's gone beyond my expectations. The ladies are phenomenal. We encourage each other. We're each other's cheerleaders; we make fun of each other. The bond we made in such a short time is just unbelievable — it's not about the quantity, it was the quality. We can't wait until everything is done so we can really have some fun and visit each other's homes around the country.
We heard Nicolle mention wanting to go on the show to grow her Instagram platform. Did you have any thoughts watching that?
I didn't even know about that. Truth be told, [when I was in the mansion] it was all about me. I would lie out in the sun and just have a good time. So I didn't hear all that.
This season on Bachelor in Paradise, we had some Goldens come in. Would that be something you would ever consider?
Why not? I think I would. It does look fun. I'm really open. I think that's what I've learned from The Golden Bachelor: when an opportunity is presented to you, just take it.
