You can't say the producers of the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast didn't see this coming. From day one, the show's subtitle — With Ted Danson & Woody Harrelson — stamped a "SOMETIMES" over Harrelson's name. Still, Danson probably never anticipated Harrelson would no-show as often as he does.
Guest Jimmy Kimmel remembered Danson telling him about the podcast in its early days, and "one of the reasons you were doing it was because you don't get to see Woody Harrelson anymore."
"Yeah," Danson nodded. "Still don't, by the way."
Danson pointed to the show's logo looming over the podcast set. "We're thinking about crossing off 'SOMETIMES' and saying 'RARELY,'" he explained.
"Rarely" would be giving Harrelson too much credit. When Harrelson popped in (via Zoom, of course) for last week's Mark Ruffalo episode, listeners were likely startled to learn Harrelson was still part of the enterprise. He was nowhere to be found for recent conversations with Kathryn Hahn, Chelsea Handler, Howie Mandel, Patton Oswalt, Rob Reiner, Kate Mara, Tony Hale, Charlie Day, Judd Apatow, Seth MacFarlane, Greg Kinnear, Octavia Spencer… and that's about where I gave up looking for Harrelson's previous visit.
Kimmel laughed while offering a defense: "Woody's all over the place," he offered. "He doesn't like to be pinned down."
"He's also working nonstop," said Danson without noting that he somehow manages to film the second season of Man on the Inside without shirking his hosting duties.
Goofing on Harrelson gave Kimmel a chance to share a Harrelson story, "really one of the funniest things that ever happened to me." Harrelson and Owen Wilson showed up at the Kimmel house for "a rare afternoon visit," and Kimmel, who likes to cook, fired up the outdoor pizza oven. He knew Harrelson was vegan, so he went all out to prepare the perfect pie.
"They come over, and they're a lot of fun," Kimmel remembered. "They're immediately competing with each other. It's remarkable — they're like children-adults."
As Kimmel cooked, Harrelson approached Jimmy's wife, Molly. "He says, 'Hey, do you mind? What's the address? I want to order Domino's.'"
Order crappy pizza while Kimmel was preparing the gourmet version in the backyard? "Listen, I just have to tell you," Molly replied, "Jimmy's going to be really upset if you order Domino's. He's very serious about his pizza, and you know, he's been cooking for you."
Harrelson and Wilson huddled. They didn't want to upset Kimmel, but were also confused about why their request would cause a problem.
"Turned out they wanted to order the game dominoes," Kimmel laughed, an idea alien to him and Molly. There's a place that delivers children's games in an hour?
But if anyone has a connection to get a good time delivered, it's probably Woody Harrelson.
