Throughout its original seven-season run, many Gilmore Girls fans rooted for Lorelai Gilmore's (Lauren Graham) romance with diner owner Luke Danes, played by Scott Patterson. While their relationship didn't officially turn romantic until the Season 4 finale, there were plenty of sweet moments between the pair throughout the show. For instance, in Season 4, Episode 14, Luke provides an overwhelmed Lorelai much-needed comfort while she sobs over having difficulty opening her inn.
In an October 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in celebration of the show's 25th anniversary, Patterson said he improvised wrapping his arms around Lorelai during the emotional scene.
"It's a very brief scene where I have to comfort her. I remember after we shot it, especially the close-up because it requires Lauren to emote on a very deep level, and it's very difficult and specific and scary," said Patterson to the publication. "It doesn't matter how talented you are or how easily you wear your heart on your sleeve, you're doing this in front of 30 people and it's midnight and cold and everybody's tired. I just remember after we finished, I held her head and wrapped her in my arms a little bit — none of that was scripted."
According to Patterson, Graham said she appreciated him as her scene partner.
"Of course, you're going to do that as a supportive potential boyfriend or somebody who really cares about somebody — and she whispered in my ear, 'Thank you so much for being such a great scene partner.' It was a very sweet moment that I'll always treasure because that's the soul of acting; it's really just supporting each other," said Patterson in the interview.
Lauren Graham & Scott Patterson Discussed Their Characters' Romance in 2016 Interviews
While Lorelai and Luke had an on-again-off-again relationship, they eventually married in the show's Netflix four-episode reboot, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which premiered in 2016. In separate 2016 interviews with People/Entertainment Weekly Network, Graham and Patterson shared their thoughts about the character's somewhat complicated romance.
Graham said that while Luke and Lorelai are quite different, they are suitable for each other. She explained that Luke's "gruffness brings out her sort of flirtatiousness." In addition, she said as the show progressed, fans could see that "they really connect" and "need each other as balance."
"She lightens him up and he kind of roots her a little bit," said Graham in the 2016 interview.
Patterson also said that he understood why it took four seasons for Luke and Lorelai to have an established romance.
"I think it's good storytelling. If you know you have something that combustible and that incendiary, milk it, just drag it out as long as you can. Because that's the soul of drama," said Patterson in the 2016 interview.
