Shakira, who co-headlined the Super Bowl LIV halftime show with Jennifer Lopez, has spoken out about the criticism Bad Bunny is receiving for his appointment

Super Bowl halftime show veteran Shakira is happy to pass on the torch to Bad Bunny.

Six years after the Puerto Rican rapper, 31, joined the Colombian singer-songwriter, 48, on stage during her co-headlining performance with Jennifer Lopez at Super Bowl LIV, he is set to be the star of the Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show.

Being that Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, primarily performs in Spanish, his selection as the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show headliner has been met with criticism.

Days after the announcement was made, President Donald Trump's adviser Corey Lewandowski and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will be present at the 2026 Super Bowl and its halftime show.

For Shakira, however, Bad Bunny's time to be at the center stage has been a long time coming — and is very well deserved.

"It's about time," she told Variety in an interview published Tuesday, Oct. 21. "I remember when we did ours that even having part of our set in Spanish was a bold move… Acceptance of Spanish-language music as part of the mainstream has come so far from when I started."

The "She Wolf" hitmaker likes to believe that all the time that her music was "met with resistance or puzzlement from the English-speaking world before it was embraced, helped forge the path to where we are now."

Shakira is "so proud" to watch Bad Bunny perform on "the biggest stage in the world" as he "represents not only Latin culture but also how important Spanish language music has become on a global scale and how universal it has become."

"It's the perfect moment for a performance like this," she said. "I can't wait to watch it."

When asked for her thoughts on Bad Bunny being named the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show performer, Lopez, 56, encouraged sports fans to avoid closing themselves off to "something wonderful."

"Don't do that to yourself. That's what I would say. I'm telling you, just give it a chance," she said during an Oct. 9, appearance on CBS Mornings.

Bad Bunny, for his part, said in a press statement that his appointment as the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show performer is bigger than himself.

"What I'm feeling goes beyond myself," his statement said. "It's for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history. Ve y dile a tu abuela, que seremos el HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL."
