Jimmy Fallon is mourning the loss of his beloved dog and recurring Tonight Show guest, Gary.

The 51-year-old late-night host announced the loss of his family's golden retriever in an emotional Monday Instagram post, paying tribute to the pooch they've loved for over a decade.

"She was the last name we signed on every birthday card. She was our first baby, a therapist, a pillow, a big sister, a schoolmarm, a comedian, a party girl and a rebel," Fallon began his post. "Definitely not a watchdog—she would have let burglars in and shown them where we kept the bacon and American cheese slices."

The reminiscing was accompanied by several photos of Gary over the years, including an image of Fallon lying on a carpet with the dog and another snap of his wife, Nancy Juvonen, and their two daughters covered in flowers and embracing Gary.

Fallon continued, "Always smiling even when she slept. She loved a good scratch and would lean into you if she liked you, though 'if' is generous—she did this for basically everyone. She would jump into the pool immediately after being shampooed and dried (noooooo!) then she'd do her laps (backstroke - jk doggie paddle) then lie in the grass on her back doing bunny kicks with her tongue sticking out. That meant summer to me."

Fallon then noted how grateful the family remains for the "13 and a half years" they got to spend with Gary. "Franny, Winnie, Mommy and I miss you. The house misses you," he wrote. "The house is so quiet. The quiet is so loud. But that quiet is slowly being filled with stories about you and laughter amongst the sniffles. Thank you for everything. Gosh, we miss you so much. Goodnight, Gary."

Fallon's news was met with plenty of well-wishes and condolences from friends and fans alike.

"I am so sorry to you and your family, Jimmy," wrote This Is Us star Chrissy Metz. "Sure sounds like you were all beautifully changed by one another."

Bravo's Andy Cohen commented, "Omg. Gary. the very best. I am so sorry."

Paris Hilton sent her love as well, writing, "Hey buddy, I am so sorry for your loss. I know the pain is unbearable. Sending you and your family so much love."

Actor Taylor Lautner commented, "Sending you all the love in the world jimmy," while former Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller added, "My deepest condolences. Cherish the memories!"

Fallon first met Gary in 2012, when she was just a puppy and he was still hosting Late Night. She was meant to appear in a single bit for the show, but he ended up taking her home.

"I think she was a political pundit," he recalled to PEOPLE in 2017. "I was having a debate with her, and she was dressed in a suit."

At the time, he and Juvonen were trying to have kids. "I think this was just a thing to kind of distract us while we're working on that," Fallon shared.

As for her name, they decided to name Gary for the political pundit she played on the show, Gary Frick Jr. The couple would eventually welcome two daughters, who were a source of even more love for the family dog.

"It's companionship," Fallon said of his bond with Gary. "It's so much love. It's unconditional love. I try to do everything with my dog."

Over the years, Gary made several appearances on Fallon's late night show, especially during the Tonight Show: At Home Edition that began during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. At one point, Gary adorably crashed Fallon's monologue, and on another occasion, the host interviewed his pooch.

Fallon is the second late-night host this year to publicly mourn the loss of a beloved pet. Seth Meyers recently said goodbye to his family's Italian Greyhound, writing, "RIP to Frisbee, our OG IG who I was happy to go grey with. She was at her best curled in your lap and patient when we dressed her up like a pilgrim. Thanks for 14 amazing years, girl."
