Limp Bizkit bassist Sam Rivers' death was called in as a possible cardiac arrest

A spokesperson confirms to PEOPLE they responded to a call for a "nonresponsive person in cardiac arrest"

Rivers died on Oct. 18 at age 48

Limp Bizkit bassist Sam Rivers' death was called in as a possible cardiac arrest, according to authorities.

A spokesperson for the St. Johns County Fire Rescue in Florida confirms to PEOPLE that they responded to a call for a "nonresponsive person in cardiac arrest" at Rivers' home on Oct. 18, the day he died. He was 48.

TMZ reported that a rep for the St. Johns County Sheriff's Department — who did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment — said deputies responded to an "attended death" at Rivers' address. Attended deaths are when a patient dies at home under the care of an attending physician or licensed hospice.

Rivers' cause of death remains unclear. PEOPLE has reached out to the St. Johns County Medical Examiner.

Limp Bizkit announced the loss in an Instagram post on Oct. 18 that was signed by bandmates Fred Durst, Wes Borland, John Otto and DJ Lethal.

"Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat," the band wrote. "Sam Rivers wasn't just our bass player — he was pure magic. The pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound. From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous."

The post described Rivers as "a once-in-a-lifetime kind of human," and said "his spirit will live forever in every groove, every stage, every memory."

"We love you, Sam. We'll carry you with us, always," they wrote. "Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends."

Bassist Sam Rivers of Limp Bizkit performs live on stage during a concert at Zitadelle Spandau on June 2, 2015 in Berlin, Germany.

Rivers was a founding member of the nu metal group, which he started in 1994 with Durst. He last performed with Limp Bizkit in August at the Leeds Festival in the U.K.

He briefly left the group in 2015 amid liver issues that stemmed from alcohol abuse, telling writer Jon Wiederhorn that he "got liver disease from excessive drinking." He rejoined the lineup in 2018.

"I had to leave Limp Bizkit in 2015 because I felt so horrible, and a few months after that I realized I had to change everything because I had really bad liver disease," he said, according to Variety. "I quit drinking and did everything the doctors told me. I got treatment for the alcohol and got a liver transplant, which was a perfect match."
