For High Potential's Oct. 21 episode, it was all about Halloween, with a haunting new mystery to solve. But if you've been watching the Kaitlin Olson-led ABC crime drama long enough, you know they're dropping clues here, there and everywhere in terms of the series' continuing storylines. In particular, where the heck is Roman, Morgan's ex? And when will we finally track that guy down?
The High Potential team has done an impeccable job of keeping us engaged with individual crimes, all while extending this Roman storyline since the first season. So here's how things stacked up with this week's episode "Chasing Ghosts," and what I think they mean.

This week's case involves the murder of Danny Sternblatt, a high-profile divorce lawyer who represents a lot of heavy hitters, but is also in the middle of his own contentious divorce. Danny happens to live in a gorgeous, historical home once owned by old Hollywood royalty—a couple with their own tragic past.
There are a few suspects, including Danny's estranged wife (played by Robyn Lively), his "spiritual advisor" Calliope, and even his own daughter, who stood to inherit the house upon his death.
I'll get to the "whodunnit" of it all in a minute, but first let's dive into what some of the episode's more intentional scenes might mean for some of the series more burning questions.
Wait, is Captain Nick Wagner a good guy now?
The jury is still out on the squad's new captain, Nick Wagner (Steve Howey), however this episode showed more dimensions to the mysterious character. In Parade's interview with Howey, he alluded to the reasons behind his character's arrival at the precinct, including the possibility that his interest in Morgan is actually to get her help in solving a crime very personal to him.
Now, admittedly, I initially thought Nick was somehow involved in Roman's disappearance, and wanted to get closer to Morgan to keep tabs on the guy. However between Howey's candid mention of Nick's own personal mission and a conversation Nick had with Morgan this week, I'm inclined to believe I was wrong.
There's a softer moment between Nick and Morgan over a bowl of Halloween candy in the precinct kitchen. They're casually chatting about marriage, with Morgan uncomfortably suggesting that kind of union isn't for her. It sort of makes me wonder if she would have married Roman had he not disappeared. Maybe he is her person?
But then when she asks Nick if he has ever been married, he says he "came close." Apparently his intended passed away a few years ago. I don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce that this romantic partner's death could be the one he wants investigated. It also feels like this piece of information has softened Morgan's stance at least a little on the new captain.

Where are we on Roman's whereabouts?
If you're as impatient as I am, you want a few bigger nuggets on this Roman situation. We don't get a ton of obvious information in this episode, I'm not gonna lie. But there are some subtle things that I really want to explore.
First: When we first see her in this episode, Morgan wakes up cuddling the backpack Roman had passed off to Arthur (Mekhi Phifer) in Nevada. This makes me feel like there are some very heartwarming things in that backpack, or something she wants to hold close to her, even if it doesn't offer many clues as to his current whereabouts.
At the end of the episode Morgan shows Ava (Amirah J) something important from the backpack—a drawing Roman did of her first grade dance recital. But, that dance recital happened after his disappearance. Ava is confused as to how he would have known about that and Morgan admits that he must have been there, somewhere, watching.
All of this goes back to my theory that Roman has to be the love of Morgan's life, and that he has been keeping a close eye on them while he's been in hiding.
Cool, but who killed Danny?
If you aren't here for my speculative High Potential musings, let's get back to this week's case.
Ultimately, the final two suspects are boiled down to Calliope, the quack spiritual advisor, or Danny's daughter. However, in true Morgan form, she knows it has to be Calliope, and the murderer falls right into a trap set out by the squad. Yes, it was indeed Calliope who killed Danny in an attempt to get a diamond necklace likely worth $20M, left behind by the very Hollywood actress the man was convinced haunted the place. Case closed ... for now.
