Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders moved up the team's depth chart after the Joe Flacco trade a couple weeks ago, but it doesn't sound like he's much closer to receiving playing time. Despite the promotion, Sanders is not getting reps with the starters during team practices, according to ESPN.

It marks a change for the Browns, who previously allowed rookie Dillon Gabriel to take snaps with the starters during practices when Flacco was the team's starting quarterback.

The team hasn't used the same strategy with Sanders now that Gabriel has assumed the starting role. That's less a knock on Sanders, however, and more a result of Gabriel's inexperience, head coach Kevin Stefanski explained Wednesday.

"With a young quarterback, with Dillon starting, you want to make sure he gets a lot of the reps. It's different when you have a veteran with Joe," said Stefanski, who also noted that Sanders is "still getting reps in a bunch of periods."

Stefanski's reasoning makes sense. When Flacco was starting, the team was able to get the best of both worlds. It could give the 40-year-old Flacco some extra time off knowing he would still be adequately prepared on game day while allowing Gabriel to get experience with the starters.

But with Gabriel still learning the ropes, it's imperative the Browns give the rookie as many starting reps as possible.

Gabriel, 24, hasn't lit up the box score in his first three starts with the team. After tossing two touchdowns in his first career start, Gabriel hasn't thrown a touchdown in his last two games. He also hasn't turned the ball over during that stretch.

The Browns' conservative game plan with Gabriel has gotten mixed results. The team remained competitive in his first start before getting blown out by the Pittsburgh Steelers in his second. The Browns then destroyed the Miami Dolphins in Week 7, but it was fellow rookie Quinshon Judkins, and not Gabriel, who played the biggest role in that win.

While Gabriel hasn't excelled just yet, the Browns seem content to be patient with the rookie. Barring an injury, it sounds like Gabriel will receive at least a few more starts before the team considers more work for Sanders.

If that time comes, the team might be best served getting ahead of the announcement. Following Stefanski's comments Wednesday, fans will be quick to notice the instant Sanders gets a single rep with the Browns' first-team offense.
