Fisher Stevens explains why his Amazon rainforest documentary is a "crucial" watch

The movie is being is live-streamed on Wednesday, Oct. 22, followed by a panel with actors Bill Pullman and Maisie Williams

Stevens co-produced the doc with Leonardo DiCaprio

Actor and director Fisher Stevens, who, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, produced the Amazon rainforest documentary We Are Guardians, wants people to understand why films like this are more vital than ever.

"This moment is so crucial," Stevens tells PEOPLE about the film, which is live-streaming Wednesday, Oct. 22, followed by a panel with actors Bill Pullman and Maisie Williams.

The doc follows the story of Marçal Guajajara a leader of the Guajajara people in Brazil who have risked their lives to fight illegal invasion and destruction of their ancestral lands for over 400 years.

Stevens notes that We Are Guardians doesn't just cover the destruction of the rainforest but also tells the story of the people working for the large logging and farming corporations.

"You feel for them, because they're working for 'the man.' They don't really have a lot of choice. And they're not being paid for it very well either."

But corporate greed is a tough foe to negotiate with. "I did this movie with Leonardo DiCaprio Before the Flood, and we interviewed these major corporations in the Amazon, like Cargill, who promised to farm more sustainably, and things have not gotten any better. It's now 10 years later," he says.

"The irony is that the Cargill corporation is a family," he continues. "It's private, one of the largest privately owned companies in the world, and they grow all the soy and stuff in the Amazon. I think there's 11 billionaires alone in that family."

He says the current Trump administration hardly helps when it comes to environmental matters.

"Knowing that the Trump administration is very heavily funded by the fossil fuels... I mean, the Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright is a former oil executive who refuses to [make change]. He says, 'Oh yeah, the climate is changing...' But this administration is doing everything it can to not be responsible citizens for the world."

Stevens adds, "We've been saying this forever, that the rainforest is crucial, but it really is. It really does sequester the carbon, and this is the first time, as you can see in the film, that with the fires and everything there's more carbon emissions going out than going in."

Still, he has hopes that the movie can help make positive changes.

"We've had a lot of luck with it, and so many people who have seen it have donated money so that those guarding the forest have been able to buy equipment, drones and cameras, to keep watch on illegal practices. Which is why we're doing this screening, to keep raising money for them so that they can keep guarding their home."

He adds, "It's a beautiful film. And also entertaining."

We Are Guardians is live-streaming Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. ET/ 4 p.m. PT.
