Boone detailed why he partnered with Google Maps for his American Heart Tour
As Benson Boone gears up to launch his biggest tour yet, he's reminiscing about the times he dreamt of "Nights Like These."
Before Boone kicks off his American Heart Tour on Friday, Aug. 22, in Saint Paul, Minn., the singer-songwriter caught up with PEOPLE to discuss his plans for the road, his partnership with Google Maps and his monumental year.
"This tour is vastly different than anything I have ever done before," Boone, 23, tells PEOPLE exclusively.
"It's so much bigger and it feels like a humongous step from last tour," he says, adding that this is the first time he's rehearsed for a show.
Before, Boone and his band would "know the music" and "just figure it out onstage." This time, he's got big plans.
"[We have] a far bigger stage than I've ever seen before and there's little choreographed moments and better outfits and everyone's a little more locked in," he says. "We rehearsed for like two weeks, which probably doesn't sound very interesting at all, but that's a big deal to me."

The tour is in support of Boone's latest studio album American Heart, which dropped on June 20 and debuted at No. 2 in the U.S. and Canada. Boone wrote the album with Jack LaFrantz, and it's a reflection of the "fun and good memories that we have." Most of all, they were written to be performed.
"Some of my earlier music was hard for me to perform sometimes because I have so much energy on stage that it's hard to perform ballads over and over and over," he says.
When asked what songs he's most excited to perform, Benson says it's "Wanted Man" and "Reminds Me of You."
For the tour, Boone partnered with Google Maps to turn the excitement up a notch. The partnership features a limited edition driving avatar, so that fans can ride like Boone in his green Mustang. The "Slow It Down" singer also curated a list of adventurous places in tour cities across the U.S. and Canada, including all of his favorites like Taco Bell, roller rinks, skate parks and more.
"I've been very anxious to get [the tour] going for almost a year," he says, adding that the partnership is "a very special thing for me in a very subtle way."
"I can connect with fans just so they understand what I like and places I want to go and things I'm interested in... I'm a simple guy," Boone says.

In between shows, Boone plans to spend his days catching up on sleep and playing Spikeball, frisbee or rollerblading with his friends.
The tour will wrap on Dec. 4 in Abu Dhabi — and as Boone reflects on the year, he says it's been his "biggest" yet. Three major moments stand out to him, though, and that includes the Grammys, where he performed "Beautiful Things," Coachella, where he surprised the crowd with Queen's Brian May — and making his "Mr. Electric Blue" music video.
"I met so many new people that I look up to and that I think are so incredible," he says of the Grammys. "I feel like that's the first time a lot of people saw me."
He adds, "I know a lot of people have heard 'Beautiful Things,' and I think most of the people that have heard it do not connect the dots between Benson Boone and 'Beautiful Things,' and I think that performance helped with that."
