As Hurricane Erin crept toward the U.S. mainland on Wednesday, Aug. 20, a North Carolina man captured the storm's powerful waves battering the state's coastline.
By Friday, Aug. 22, Erin, a category 2 hurricane, was drifting away from the coast and is expected to gradually weaken to a post-tropical cyclone by the weekend, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
However, in the days prior, as residents braced for the storm's full impacts, officials in Dare County warned locals about possible rip currents and life-threatening conditions along the North Carolina coast.
"The combination of heavy shore break, swift-moving water, and strong rip currents presents life-threatening conditions," Dare County officials said in a bulletin on Aug. 21.

Brian McArthur, a resident in Dare County, which partially encompasses the Outer Banks, filmed the conditions on Aug. 20, at one point being knocked off his feet by the ocean overwash.

McArthur was swept off his feet as he filmed the ocean overwash from atop a 10-foot sand dune in Hatteras, he told Storyful.
"I noticed the water sucking way out and when it came back in there was a double wave that sent white water up the dune where I was standing," he said.
McArthur added, "The wave washed away the sand from under my feet and I got obliterated."
The North Carolina Department of Transportation closed Highway 12 in Hatteras, where McArthur recorded the surge, on Aug. 20, saying in part that the conditions were "too unsafe for people to be driving in."

According to an advisory issued by the Hurricane Weather Center at 5 a.m. ET on Friday, Aug. 22, Erin is tracking off Halifax, Nova Scotia.
While forecasters expect Erin will transition to a post-tropical storm by nighttime on Aug. 22, they predict it will continue to be a "powerful hurricane-force low pressure system" through the weekend, according to the advisory.
Swells caused by the storm could create life-threatening surf and rip current conditions in the Bahamas, Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast and Atlantic Canada through the weekend, according to forecasters.
Coastal flooding is also possible during high tide in some parts of the Mid-Atlantic and New England through Aug. 22, forecasters said.
