Political thriller Hostage premiered on Netflix on Aug. 21

The limited series follows Prime Minister Abigail Dalton (Suranne Jones) after her husband is abducted

The show ends with a violent confrontation

Hostage may be a dark political thriller, but its ending is a beacon of hope.

The limited Netflix series — which premiered on Aug. 21 — follows Prime Minister Abigail Dalton (Suranne Jones), whose husband Dr. Alex Anderson (Ashley Thomas) has been abducted in a ploy to force her to step down from her high-ranking position.

With political adversary French President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy) as her only hope of recovering her husband and his fellow hostages in French Guiana, Dalton must choose between her country's honor and her family's safety.

"I honestly believe what [Jones] done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away," creator Matt Charman told Netflix's Tudum in August 2025. "An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family — she's fierce, ruthless, and you can't take your eyes off of her."

So, how does the dramatic limited series end? Here's everything to know about the final episodes of Netflix's Hostage.

Going into the final episode of Hostage, a bomb has detonated outside of 10 Downing Street, killing Toussaint. Dalton's daughter Sylvie (Isobel Akuwudike) and Dr. Anderson, who has been rescued from the French Guiana, are evacuated to a safe house.

Dalton then relies on her colleagues Kofi (Lucian Msamati), Ayesha (Hiftu Quasem) and Kathy (Sara Powell) to help her gain access to her cabinet and expose General Livingston (Mark Lewis Jones) as the mastermind behind the country's terrorist attacks and the French Guiana abductions. After Livingston mentions a classified detail about the execution of the Downing Street bomb, he is hauled away in handcuffs.

Subsequently, acting Prime Minister Dan Ogilvy (Pip Carter) concedes Dalton her rightful position.

However, Dalton then receives a call from Livingston's righthand man Captain John Michael Shagan (Martin McCann), who demands that she come to her family's hiding place alone. Shagan and his corporal Saskia (Sophie Robertson) have broken into the safe house and are holding her family hostage.

In the last episode of the show, Livingston is revealed to be the brains behind the abduction of Alex Anderson and his fellow doctors. His motivation is purely political: If he can oust Dalton — who imposed significant military budget cuts on his troops — and cause political unrest, he can persuade her replacement to increase military spending and safeguard his armed forces.

However, Shagan has more personal reasons for the kidnapping. He was stationed in Belize years earlier when Dalton ordered an abrupt evacuation of British troops from the area.

Her decision left Shagan's pregnant fiancée, a local translator who was promised protection by the British troops, behind to be murdered by the Guatemalan army. As Shagan reveals, she was six months pregnant when she was killed.

During the final showdown, Sylvie steals a gun from Saskia. She is urged not to shoot Shagan by both her mother and her father. However, she is ultimately provoked to do so when Shagan tells her that he ordered the death of her grandfather (James Cosmo).

Her gun fires just as police make their way to the scene, and she is tackled to the ground by the officers.

Though it initially seems like Sylvie has gone to jail for her actions, the series then flashes forward to three months later, where she's shown petting a cat and giving her mom a hug before Dalton heads out for a big speech.

Toussaint is killed in the penultimate episode after Shagan detonates a bomb on Saskia's computer.

The machine has been brought directly to Toussaint at Downing Street by her ex-lover and stepson Matheo (Corey Mylchreest) as evidence of Saskia's collusion against the government.

Toussaint realizes it's about to go off right before it explodes and throws Matheo out of the way, but fails to save herself.

Prior to her tragic death, Toussaint had reclaimed her power, announcing her intent to divorce her belittling husband and address her people with honesty.

Her legacy lives on through Dalton, who hangs Toussaint's portrait at Downing Street and quotes her final speech at the show's end.

At the end of Hostage, Dalton remains in her position, with both her family and her team rallying behind her.

Reciting words from Toussaint's last speech, Dalton promises to always be honest with her constituents and calls for a general election to resolve issues faced during her leadership, including countrywide drug shortages and widespread political opposition.

Her family is finally safe, with Sylvie having fatally shot Shagan.

During the final confrontation, Alex rushes Shagan and is stabbed. Ultimately, Sylvie shoots Shagan, ending the fight.

In the end, Alex survives his wounds and continues to support his wife in her political endeavors.

Will there be a season 2 of Hostage?

Hostage was billed as a limited series, so it's unlikely that it will return for a second season.

However, if it were to come back for a season 2, Hostage could explore how Shagan's death has affected Sylvie, Charman says.

"It was completely intentional around Sylvie because I think, truthfully, those ripples ... never stop," he told Radio Times in August 2025. "If you're in a situation where you do something that completely crosses a line as a human being, there's no end to that trauma or that sense of, 'Who am I now? 'Who was I before?' That would be fun to explore, what that does to a person as they enter adulthood."
