Now, a photo of a man at the scene is going viral
Ever since a daring jewelry heist at the Louvre in Paris on Oct. 19, the internet has turned into a global detective agency — with people everywhere trying to crack the case.
As theories flooded social media in the days following the robbery, one photo of a man began making its rounds online. The image, taken by Paris-based photographer Thibault Camus for the , shows three policemen standing in front of a squad car in the museum's courtyard.

But it wasn't the officers who caught the internet's attention — it was the dapper gentleman in a fedora and tailored suit, standing just off to the side.
Within hours, the photo had gone viral, sparking memes, wild theories, and thousands of comments trying to uncover the man's true identity. People immediately began to wonder: Was he a detective investigating the heist himself?
"I'm sure you guys have seen this photo floating around the internet that this is apparently the detective that is investigating the Louvre jewel heist," one woman said on TikTok. "I mean, look at this dapper young man complete with fedora and umbrella."
"Someone needs to write a book about this immediately," she added. "I mean, look at this guy."

And the fascination didn't stop there. "This is the detective," another woman said in a TikTok video. "He has the whole fit going on ... and what's making me laugh is the dude giving side eye to the dude dressed to the tens. He's like, 'You knew you came dressed like this...you dressed like that on purpose.' "
"I love it," she added. "It's perfect, it's so good."
Another woman posted that since the case began, she's been obsessed with following every detail. When she first saw the photo of the man, she couldn't stop thinking about it.
"He literally looks like a 1940s detective," she said in the video. "He's clearly been waiting for this his whole life. Give him a seven-book series and movie adaptation right now. I don't even care if he can solve it or not, he has a fedora."
But it turns out this man may not be connected to the case at all. In an interview with The New York Times, Camus confirmed that the man was just an unidentified passerby.
"I don't know him," the photographer told the outlet. "I don't know if he is French. Maybe a tourist? Maybe he is English."
He also explained that it was the man's outfit that made him want to capture the moment — someone dressed in an old-fashioned way walking past a historic building.
"Old-fashioned like a museum can be," Camus added.

Although the man has yet to confirm his own identity, the moment continues to captivate. People have taken the viral photo as inspiration, finding humor and joy in imagining themselves as the "main character" in their own lives.
One woman shared her reaction on TikTok once the news broke that this man has no connection to the case.
"I guess this just raises the bar for everyone, we got to start living our lives in such a way that a candid photo makes us look like we're the main character in our own movie, hopefully not like a true crime movie though," she said.
