Over the course of four years, one woman became friends with her co-worker through their shared love of gaming

After only a year of marriage, however, her co-worker announced that his wife had filed for divorce because he prioritized gaming over their relationship

Siding with his wife, the woman revealed her honest opinion on the situation, leaving her co-worker stunned

Sometimes, the closest work friendships are forged over shared interests and long hours, but even those bonds can be tested by moments of brutal honesty.

One young woman recently found herself at the center of a workplace divide after a candid comment about her co-worker's divorce.

The 20-year-old poster had worked with her 40-year-old co-worker since she was 16, describing him as her "closest work friend."

They connected over their mutual love for video games, especially Final Fantasy XIV, a multiplayer online game he frequently played and discussed.

"He talked about this game and the people he would hang out with in the game constantly, talking about the hours he spends playing it every day," the Reddit user explained in a post.

Over time, after getting to know each other better, she became the first to hear about his engagement after a decade-long relationship, and later, the impending divorce just a year after the wedding.

After tying the knot, her co-worker's conversations began shifting. "He started complaining about [his wife] and her neediness," she noted.

When the Reddit user suggested he spend more time with his wife instead of gaming, her advice was ignored.

Despite her repeated attempts to help him see his partner's perspective, the complaints continued. Eventually, she asked him to stop discussing his marital issues with her.

Two months of silence followed — until he told her that his wife had asked for a divorce.

In what she admitted was a moment of blunt honesty, she told him that she "wasn't surprised that she was divorcing him seeing as he loved final fantasy more than her."

She even highlighted that all he talked about was video games and that everything he ever said about his wife was "negative."

Her co-worker was visibly hurt and quickly turned to other colleagues — and even their boss — to voice his frustration. Though management stayed out of it, the comment created a clear divide in their small staff of 10.

"Some of my coworkers around my age...took my side while the older ones took his," she revealed.

Now, tension lingers in the workplace, and the young woman is left wondering whether her blunt truthfulness crossed a line.
