Lando Norris is the new Formula 1 points leader. And we're in for what could be an epic title battle over the final four races of the season.

Norris now has a one-point lead over McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri after an easy win in an otherwise chaotic Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday. Norris won from the pole position and wasn't passed as Piastri finished fifth thanks to a late pass of George Russell.

Piastri entered the race weekend with a 14-point lead over his teammate. He started seventh and gained two spots, but Norris scored 15 more points.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished second ahead of Max Verstappen in third thanks to a virtual safety car on the penultimate lap for Carlos Sainz's stalled car.

Verstappen entered the race third in the standings, 40 points back of Piastri. He's now 36 back of Norris and 35 back of Piastri with four Grand Prix and two sprint races remaining.

The top three drivers all used a one-stop strategy. Everyone else stopped twice, as Haas' Ollie Bearman finished fourth thanks to a wild sequence involving Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen started fifth and tried to go four-wide with Norris, Leclerc and Hamilton at the start of the race. He was pushed onto the curb and went wide at Turn 1 through the grass before rejoining the track ahead of where he started.

Leclerc also went off the track as Norris retained the lead and Hamilton kept third after Verstappen slid back to fourth. A few laps later, Verstappen went for a big move on Hamilton in Turn 1 and went off the track again.

That put Verstappen side-by-side with Hamilton after the first set of corners and Hamilton went off the track himself after briefly locking up his brakes. Somehow, Hamilton ended up being the only driver penalized for the sequence, as he got a 10-second penalty for gaining an advantage after leaving the track.

Hamilton's penalty was legitimate. He definitely gained on Verstappen after he went off the track. But it was odd that Hamilton got penalized and Verstappen didn't.

The penalty ultimately relegated Hamilton to an eighth-place finish, though Ferrari holds second place in the constructors' standings by a point over Mercedes. McLaren has already clinched the constructors' title as Norris has scored one more point than Ferrari and two more points than Mercedes so far this season.
