Don Bluth, who changed the landscape of animated films with his many great works from years past, made a rare appearance at an industry event to attend the world premiere of the documentary Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival on Oct. 25.

The 88-year-old filmmaker, whose many impressive films include An American Tail, The Land Before Time, Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH, among others, attended the special screening and participated in a Q&A afterwards along with the directors of the documentary, Dave LaMattina and Chad Walker, and composer Fergal Lawler.

Dressed in a stylish suit and shining black shoes, Bluth also posed for some portraits at the event, looking happy and relaxed at the film festival.

Along with the 2025 documentary premiere taking place at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, Bluth has a history with the university, with the animator and his frequent collaborator, Gary Goldman, donating the Don Bluth Studios Animation Archive to SCAD in 2005, which includes materials from much of Bluth's work, both finished and otherwise.

Bluth Created Landmark Animated Films in the '80s and '90s

Bluth began his career in animation at Walt Disney Productions, working on Robin Hood, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, The Rescuers and more before he decided to leave and found his own animation studio, Don Bluth Productions.

In the 1980s, he teamed up with Steven Spielberg to create a few films that are still seen as classics, including An American Tail and The Land Before Time. He stopped working with Spielberg before making his next hit, All Dogs Go to Heaven, going on to create quite a few more animated films over the years, such as Thumbelina and Anastasia, the latter of which was another big success for Bluth.

He Continues to Teach Animation and Connect With Fans

Over the years, Bluth has continued spreading his love for hand-drawn animation, attending conventions often to connect with fans and teaching animation through Don Bluth University. Bluth also released a memoir called Somewhere Out There: My Animated Life in 2022.

In general, Bluth has stayed away from Hollywood and major entertainment industry events, making his appearance at the screening and Q&A at SCAD a rare treat.
