Danny DeVito is fully embracing life as a grandfather.
While chatting exclusively with PEOPLE at the 18th Annual GO Gala in Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 17, the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star, 80, shared that he and his grandson, Carmine — whom his eldest daughter, Lucy Chet DeVito, welcomed in July 2024 — are "good buddies."
"I just got a bunch of toys for him. I got a couple of new books. And I got a couple of tennis balls," the actor says of his gifts for his grandson.
"Oh great, he loves a ball," Lucy, 42, adds.
When asked how he knows exactly what to buy for the 1-year-old, Danny quipped that he simply goes to the store and looks for "what I would like." The actor is also a grandfather through his middle daughter, Grace "Gracie" Fan DeVito, who welcomed a daughter, Sinclair, in 2023.
Danny shares Lucy and Grace, 40, along with son Jake, 38, with ex Rhea Perlman.
Lucy tells PEOPLE that the Batman Returns actor is "obsessed" with being a grandfather, and says their family finds opportunities to "hang out all the time."
"[We] eat a lot of food and play," she explains. "Carmine and him are best buds."

Danny previously opened up about the joys of grandfatherhood in a 2024 AARP video. In the clip, he shared that thanks to the little ones, he's had plenty of "joy" to fuel his life.
"In two years, my daughters have had a baby each, and since these babies have been born, you gotta tamper me down in the joy department," he said at the time. 'I'm just like, you know, busting."
"There's that saying: 'A watched pot never boils.' So I apply that to my kids. I look at them all the time, because I don't want them to boil," he continued. "I want them to take their time and grow."

The proud dad of three also shared that his growing family is one of his biggest motivators. "No matter what happens in your life, the main thing is that you've got family and friends. I'm very fortunate. Blessing showered down on me, and I wish it for everybody," he added in the clip.

The Matilda star previously recalled how he found out about Lucy's pregnancy with Carmine while they were starring together in the Broadway play I Need That. He shared on The Talk that Lucy revealed the news during their pre-performance chats "about how we were going to do the play."
"One night, she sits in her spot and she's got her cup of tea," he said, noting that they were set to "go on" in 30 minutes.
"She says, 'Dad, I got something to tell you. I'm pregnant,' " Danny recalled. "I just burst into tears."
