"I have a blinding-eye condition, and there's a good chance that I'm going to go blind," Madison, a UX/UI designer, says on the first episode of the season. "This experiment is so much more to me because it simulates what my life could be like when I do lose my vision. I know what I need in a partner with my diagnosis. What eye condition does Madison from Love Is Blind have?
Madison Maidenberg was diagnosed at age 21 with a recessive form of retinitis pigmentosa — a rare genetic condition with no family history — according to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, for which she is a brand ambassador.
According to her profile on their page, "Madison found both answers and community through the Foundation Fighting Blindness. After receiving her genetic testing through the Foundation, she became deeply committed to its mission. Driven by purpose and connection, Madison joined the Colorado chapter and has served as Vice President for the past two years. During that time, she also led as Auction Chair for the Foundation's largest golf event, helping raise $590,000 to fund cutting-edge research and resources."
What is retinitis pigmentosa?
Retinitis pigmentosa, according to the Cleveland Clinic, "affects your retina, the light-sensing layers of cells at the back of your eye." The condition is inherited and something that people are born with, and many living with the diagnosis lose their vision by adulthood.
According to the National Eye Institute, there is no cure for RP. However, vision aids and rehab programs are available to help those who are diagnosed.
The Cleveland Clinic reports that symptoms can start in childhood and worsen over time. You can experience vision loss when it is dark out and eventually lose peripheral vision. Most people with retinitis pigmentosa have low vision by age 40, and some become legally blind.
Love Is Blind is currently streaming on Netflix.
