Legendary actress Diane Keaton died on Saturday, Oct. 11 at age 79
Her friend Lynda Resnick, co-owner of The Wonderful Company, shares some of her favorite memories of the late actress with PEOPLE, including her "on brand" Christmas gifts
Keaton was "the most authentic, talented woman I probably have ever known, and I've known a few," says Resnick
The late Diane Keaton was so distinct, she was a brand unto herself, according to her friend Lynda Resnick.
"I'd get a Christmas present from her and even that was on brand," recalls the entrepreneur and philanthropist. Keaton, who died at age 79 on Saturday, Oct. 11, became synonymous with turtlenecks, chic outerwear, gloves and brimmed hats — always in black, white or both.
The style icon's Christmas gifts included "fabulous books that were so big a U-Haul had to bring them," Resnick tells PEOPLE. "And I remember one year she bought canisters for cookies and things and they had black and white tops because that was her signature."
Keaton "was the original celebrity brand," she adds. "She understood her brand before in a time where no one saw themselves as a brand. Maybe Marilyn and Elvis."

Resnick, who is the co-owner, with her husband Stewart, of The Wonderful Company, befriended the late Oscar winner around 2016. Joining a group of friends that includes songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, studio executive Sherry Lansing and producer Lauren Shuler Donner, Keaton attended Saturday movie nights, a longtime weekly tradition.
"It was love at first sight," Resnick says of meeting Keaton. "She was of course the most authentic, talented woman I probably have ever known, and I've known a few."
Even on weekly Zoom calls through the COVID-19 pandemic, Keaton would arrive on screen looking not unlike the titular character in Annie Hall, says her friend. "Diane would show up in either a black or white turtleneck… The rest of us, whatever, we weren't dressed, we didn't look great. But Diane was always in character."

That signature style is evident even in photos from Keaton's fall trips with the Resnicks to their Aspen, Colorado home. A playful shot of the Godfather star strewn among the leaves with her head covered by a hat, Resnick points out, is "either Charlie Chaplin or Diane Keaton."
And it was in Aspen that Keaton's effect on fans became clear, she recalls. "Everyone would come up to Diane because she was the best friend no one knew… People would come out to her and hug her and kiss her and she was always so gracious about it."
Resnick feels lucky to have known the actress in her later years. "She proved that you could still be exquisite at 79 without any plastic surgery — she never did a thing to herself," she says. "Of course, she was perfection in her youth, but she was still exquisite at 79 years old."
Keaton "was so full of life and love and happiness," she adds. "It was always easy to be with Diane and I will miss her terribly."
