The top 10 of this week's US LBM Coaches Poll definitely won't include Penn State and Texas, two preseason College Football Playoff favorites who might be lucky to land somewhere in the back end of the Top 25 after ugly losses to UCLA and Florida, respectively.
That's going to lead to some reimagining of the top seven and open up a pair of spots in the top 10 altogether. One seat will be filled by Alabama, which was No. 11 in last week's poll but beat Vanderbilt for a second ranked victory in as many weeks.
Don't look for any changes at the top. Ohio State will remain No. 1 after beating Minnesota 42-3, followed by Oregon and Miami. The Hurricanes beat Florida State 28-22, likely knocking the Seminoles out of the national rankings. Mississippi and Texas A&M will round out the top five.
Here's how the top 10 should look when the new Coaches Poll is released later on Sunday:
1. Ohio State (5-0)
Three touchdown drives in a row in the first half helped the Buckeyes bury Minnesota 42-3. While Jeremiah Smith had 67 receiving yards and two touchdowns, the big star was Carnell Tate with 183 yards and a score on nine grabs.
2. Oregon (5-0)
Fresh off an overtime win at Penn State, the Ducks had an off Saturday to get ready for next weekend's marquee matchup with Indiana. That the Nittany Lions flopped against UCLA doesn't impact Oregon's place among the best teams in the country.
3. Miami (5-0)
Miami held off Florida State for a 28-22 win that completes a perfect record against its in-state rivals. Weather issues might've been to blame against Florida but the offense continued to struggle against the Seminoles outside of a strong surge of play in the third quarter.
4. Mississippi (5-0)
Maybe a bye week will give Lane Kiffin the space to make a crucial decision over his starting quarterback. While Austin Simmons won the job in the offseason, the way backup Trinidad Chambliss has played in his stead could make him the permanent solution the rest of the way. The Rebels are back in action on Saturday against Washington State before road trips to Georgia and Oklahoma.
5. Texas A&M (5-0)
The Aggies played well in the second half and beat Mississippi State 31-9 one week after the Bulldogs took Tennessee to overtime in an eventual loss. A&M has played much better defensively the past two weeks following a slow start. After managing just 16 points against Auburn and starting slowly against Mississippi State, the offense ran for 299 yards on 5.5 yards per carry.
6. Oklahoma (5-0)
The Sooners beat Kent State 44-0 without quarterback John Mateer, who likely won't return until later this month at the earliest. Backup Michael Hawkins Jr. had 183 yards of offense and three touchdowns in a vital warm-up game before meeting the slumping Longhorns next weekend at the Cotton Bowl.
7. Indiana (5-0)
Beating a pair of physical teams in Illinois and Iowa was good preparation for Oregon, though the Ducks occupy a different stratosphere in terms of talent, coaching, experience and explosiveness. But the Hoosiers are brutally effective on offense and maybe the most confident team in the country, taking their lead from second-year coach Curt Cignetti.
8. Alabama (4-1)
A 30-14 defeat of Vanderbilt will give Alabama the ammunition to move ahead of Georgia after beating the Bulldogs 24-21 the week before. Four wins in a row have reestablished the Crimson Tide as a national player. A big part of this turnaround has been the play of quarterback Ty Simpson, who is playing better and better as he gets more comfortable in coach Kalen DeBoer's system.
9. Georgia (4-1)
The Bulldogs raced out of the gate with a pair of long scoring drives in the first quarter and rebounded to beat Kentucky 35-14. Gunner Stockton was solid through the air with 196 yards on 8.5 yards per throw but more impactful as a runner, with 48 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries.
10. Texas Tech (5-0)
Tech's as good a team as any to spot at No. 10 given previously unbeaten Iowa State's loss to Cincinnati. Rising four spots from last week's No. 14 ranking would mean leapfrogging LSU, but voters have been less and less impressed with the Tigers in recent weeks.
