In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Padma opens up about her holiday traditions with Krishna, their love for pajamas and more

Padma Lakshmi is cooking up something festive.

The former Top Chef host and Padma's All American author, 55, stars in the 2025 Holiday Cool Nights campaign for lounge and activewear brand Soma Intimates. She's not doing it solo, though — her 15-year-old daughter, Krishna, is taking part in the fun!

Speaking with PEOPLE exclusively about their campaign, Padma shares how Soma's "breathable" Cool Nights sleepwear (seen on the duo in plaid and red with white piping) fits into her personal style.

"Pajamas can also feel like sacks, and they can envelop you, but the Soma fabric, because it is so soft, it is very flattering" — and most importantly, they just feel great."

"At the end of the day, you must feel confident, because your clothing is not worth getting upset for," Padma says on her style philosophy. "Your clothing should support your life and your needs, not the other way around."

The mother-daughter duo love their pieces so much that they immediately added it into their everyday lives after the shoot, especially Krishna. "Sometimes I'll come home and I'll see my daughter already in them, like at 7 p.m. And I'm like, 'Oh, you really like those pajamas, huh?' and she goes, 'Yeah, I do.'"

Although Padma adds, "We probably love them for slightly different reasons. I'm waking up several times in the night, because of night sweats, and I'm not a great sleeper. So when I have these on, it makes it much better."

"Pajama day" is routine in Padma and Krishna's lives. They go as follows:

"Basically, we get up (I earlier than her) and we make our bed, and then we get into crisp new pajamas after brushing our teeth or showering. Then we get back into pajamas and spend the whole day [together]. She's on her computer or doing homework, I'm reading. Then, we kind of parallel study and watch a movie."

After that is when the two will get into the fun in the kitchen. "I'll make broth and will throw in some noodles, and poach some vegetables in it. Then we make pots of tea with little sandwiches, and we get it all ready on a tray, and have a picnic on my bed."

It's one of the many traditions the duo share along with their annual holiday festivities, which includes trimming and decorating a real tree (they later recycle it into mulch through the New York City Parks and Recreation Department), making popcorn and cranberry garlands, listening to Mariah Carey and building gingerbread houses (Padma's tip for a successful house is to decorate your cookie panels before assembling).

Padma and Krishna's partnership with Soma Intimates marks the pair's first fashion campaign they've done together, and the former says her teen "had a ball" on set.

"It was just very smooth and wonderful...we were both really comfortable in our skin and that makes all the difference," she explains. "[The brand] wanted a campaign that felt authentic to my life and it's hard to do that without Krishna, because my daughter is just the center of my life."

It's this that made Padma feel more secure about welcoming her "littlehands" into her professional world (the two have only previously done a cover shoot for Vogue India's September issue).

"Obviously people have approached her," she tells PEOPLE of whether or not Krishna has expressed interest in following in her mom's footsteps when it comes to modeling. "And she does want to be an actor, she does want to be a singer, but I'd rather she wind up alone on the cover of a magazine because of accomplishments in those areas, rather than just because she's a pretty face."

"I don't knock modeling at all," clarifies Padma, who has nothing but gratitude for what the industry has brought her. "I wouldn't have the life I do, or have been able to travel as much as I did as a young person, if I hadn't modeled. It helped me pay off my college loans." But, "I'd rather she focus on her craft," she says of Krishna.
