LSU athletic director Scott Woodward oversees the Tigers football program. However, Gov. Jeff Landry (R) does not want Woodward making the call on the Tigers' coaching search.
Landry made it quite clear Wednesday that Woodward would not be leading the mission to find Brian Kelly's replacement.
"This is a pattern," Landry said. "The guy here now [Woodward] that wrote that contract cost A&M $77 million. Right now, we have a $53 million liability and we are not doing that again. And you know what? I believe we're going to find a great coach. Maybe we'll let President Trump pick it. He loves winners."
When asked straight up if Woodward would make the decision, Landry was even more direct.
"No, I can tell you right now Scott Woodward is not selecting the next coach," Landry said. "Hell, I'll let Donald Trump select it before I let him do it."

Landry's comments underscore the, uh, unique way that decisions have been made around the LSU football program over the past week. After the Tigers lost at home on Saturday night to Texas A&M, Kelly was fired Sunday after meetings at the governor's mansion.
As Landry took an outsized role in the decision to get rid of Kelly, his influence will not end there. The governor-appointed LSU Board of Supervisors will run the coaching search, as the first-term leader of the state made sure to point out the contracts that Woodward has signed football coaches to in recent seasons.
Woodward was the athletic director at Texas A&M when the school hired Jimbo Fisher away from Texas A&M. Woodward left A&M for his alma mater in 2019, a year before Fisher signed the contract extension that guaranteed him the $77 million Texas A&M paid to fire him in 2023. That extension was worth $9 million per season through 2031, up from the 10-year, $75 million deal that Fisher originally signed when Woodward hired him.
After LSU parted ways with Ed Orgeron — a man who said Wednesday that he would love to come back and coach the Tigers even though the chances of that happening are probably zero — following the 2021 season, Woodward hired Kelly from Notre Dame. That was also a 10-year deal and Kelly was making over $10 million in 2025, according to USA Today's coach salary database, and his buyout was north of $50 million.
Whatever LSU ends up paying its next coach will likely be more than what Kelly was making per season. Can the board figure out a way to attract the great coach Landry wants without the possibility of another buyout? While three coaches have won national titles at LSU this century, the Tigers have also fired three coaches over the past decade.
