Tim Curry isn't afraid to have fun with a fan.
In the spring of 1976, when the actor found out a cinema near his Greenwich Village apartment was hosting screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the actor who portrayed Dr. Frank N Furter in the original stage and screen productions wanted to check it out. Getting people to believe it was really him would be a harder task, as he details in his memoir, Vagabond.
"I was curious, however hesitant, about this new incarnation. I'd called a day ahead of time, to let them know that I was a member of the cast and to ask if they would be so kind as to reserve a few tickets for my friends and me," he recalled, explaining that the woman on the phone dismissed him as "the third Tim Curry to call today."
Further puzzled, the actor and his friends went to go check it out. Curry had no intention of drawing attention to himself.

"We went in and sat toward the back of the theater. I was far more interested in viewing the spectacle than in participating, and the crowd's engagement was a true delight to behold," he recalled.
It wasn't long until members of the crowd began to recognize Curry. As he said quiet hellos, word spread, and it was all going well until the woman from the ticket booth approached him and slammed him as "an imposter," asking him to leave.
"'You're a nightmare! And you are not Tim Curry at all — you don't even look like him!' " she said to the actor, who "stood up slowly and, with a mixture of embarrassment and triumph (neither of which were particularly founded), I handed her my passport."

The woman looked closely and realized her error, immediately trying to apologize while her "haughty expression collapsed." She asked Curry to sit back down and enjoy the show.
"I took my passport back and gestured to my friends. 'I wouldn't dream of it!' I said, and promptly strode out of the cinema.' "
The hilarious story was just one of many Curry, 79, shared in Vagabond. Curry previously told PEOPLE that there's no time like the present to publish his first memoir, as this year marks the 50th anniversary of his film debut in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the 40th anniversary of Clue.
"I've had the time of my life revisiting my favorite memories over the past couple of years, and I'm shivering with anticipation to share them with you this fall," Curry shared.
Vagabond is now available wherever books are sold.
