A man has died as a result of a rappelling incident at Zion National Park in Utah, according to local officials.

The incident occurred during the man's last rappel of Pine Creek Canyon, one of the park's well-known canyoneering attractions, on Saturday, Oct. 26, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The National Park Service received an emergency text report about a canyoneering accident and responded just after noon, prompting them to travel through the rugged terrain to reach the remote area, the sheriff's office reported.

The man has not yet been identified. USA TODAY reached out to the National Park Service for more information.

Man reportedly died at the scene

This is a photo of Zion Nation Park. A man reportedly died there from a rappelling incident.

While waiting for law enforcement, bystanders were attempting to help the 58-year-old man by doing CPR at the scene.

The man died shortly after the National Park Service arrived, which was reportedly around 1:30 p.m. local time. He was taken to the local medical examiner via helicopter.

According to ABC 4 and SFGate, a companion of the victim was rescued, and an investigation into his death is underway.

A Zion Adventure tour guide told ABC4 about the difficulty of the route: "Once you do rappel number one, there's no going back. You have to go forward," Jess Kavangh said.

According to Canyoneering USA, Pine Creek Canyon is not considered a feat for beginners, due to its "serious obstacles."
