When No. 8 Notre Dame takes the field for its Week 3 top-25 ranked showdown against No. 17 Texas A&M on Saturday at home in South Bend, college football fans will come across a familiar name across the jersey of one of the Irish's most important players this season.
If the last name on the jersey doesn't ring a bell, it may be time for a quick refresher on college football history.
In what will be his second career start, CJ Carr, the grandson of legendary college football coach Lloyd Carr, will be under center at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday for the Irish looking to lead his team to a bounce back win after being upset in Week 1 of the season to Miami.

A win for CJ Carr on Saturday under the lights at Notre Dame Stadium would mark his first collegiate victory and give Notre Dame the sweep of a home-and-home series against Texas A&M.

Is CJ Carr related to Lloyd Carr?
Yes, the Notre Dame quarterback is the grandson of the legendary Michigan football coach.
Ranked as a four-star recruit in the 2023 recruiting class according to 247Sports Composite, the Saline, Michigan QB did look at Michigan during the 2023 recruiting cycle, but ultimately chose Notre Dame over the Wolverines, a program his grandfather coached and one that his dad, Jason Carr, played for.
"I never wanted to go to school close to my hometown," CJ Carr told The Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, in 2022 when he committed to Notre Dame. "I kind of wanted to branch out a little bit. Notre Dame was just the perfect place."
He added: "My goal was to find the best spot for me."

In his debut as Notre Dame's starting quarterback vs. Miami on Aug. 31, Carr threw for more than 200 yards and scored three total touchdowns. The 6-foot-3 quarterback's third and final touchdown of the night came late in the fourth quarter on the ground when he punched in a 7-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game and erase a 14-point deficit.

Lloyd Carr coaching career
Lloyd Carr is one of the most well-known and successful Michigan football head coaches in program history, as he led the program from 1995-2007 after serving as a longtime assistant coach at Michigan.
"I'll always love Michigan," Lloyd Carr told The Athletic in 2022 about his grandson committing to Notre Dame. "But this is family. I'm just happy for him because he's so happy. He's so excited about the future."
In his 13 seasons leading the program in Ann Arbor, Lloyd Carr led Michigan to a 122-40 overall record, 13 Bowl Games and a national championship. The Wolverines national championship, which was their first in 49 years and the last before Michigan won the 2023 College Football Playoff, came in 1997 at the Rose Bowl against No. 8 Washington State.
The Wolverines, famously, split the 1997 national championship with now Big Ten foe Nebraska, which was named the national champion by the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. Michigan was tabbed as that season's national championship by the , National Football Foundation and the Football Writer's Association.
