As late-night television faces growing pressure from political figures and networks alike, David Letterman is making his stance clear — and it's striking a chord across Hollywood.
The comedy icon reacted to the news that Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been "indefinitely" suspended by ABC, following controversial remarks by Jimmy Kimmel about the recent death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot during a speaking engagement in Utah.
"Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be preempted indefinitely," a spokesperson for the network told Us Weekly.
David Letterman Defends Jimmy Kimmel Amid ABC Suspension
Speaking at the Atlantic Festival in New York City on Thursday, September 18, Letterman shared that he had spoken to Kimmel after the news broke.
"I have heard from Jimmy. He was nice enough to text me this morning," Letterman, 78, said. "He's sitting up in bed taking nourishment. He's going to be fine."
But Letterman didn't stop there.
"So what? We all make mistakes," he said, when asked about Kimmel's monologue. "By the way, the condition of the United States of America has not been perfect from the time I was born to this very day, and before that. We know that. The goal is not perfection. Mistakes are going to be made. Hopefully, it will improve."
He continued by warning about the broader implications of censorship in media. "I'm not exactly in full-mind understanding of what Jimmy said, what he was trying to say, and what mistake was made."
Letterman, who hosted Late Night with David Letterman on NBC and The Late Show with David Letterman on CBS, emphasized that moments like this are part of a dangerous trend in entertainment and politics.
FCC Chair Threatens Action Against ABC Over Jimmy Kimmel Suspension
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr publicly criticized Kimmel's remarks, stating during an appearance on The Benny Show. "We can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change conduct and take actions on Kimmel, or there's going to be additional work for the FCC ahead."
Letterman took a swipe at Carr's comment. "Who is hiring these goons? Mario Puzo? The FCC: we're not happy until you're not happy, for God's sakes."
