American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone ran the second-fastest time ever by a woman as she won her first world title in the 400m during Thursday's World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
McLaughlin-Levrone's time of 47.78 seconds was just shy of German Marita Koch's world record time of 47.60, which was set in 1985. Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic was just behind the two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist with a 47.98, third-fastest of all time.

Despite the slick track, McLaughlin-Levrone's time did set a championship record, which was formerly held by Jarmila Kratochvílová (47.99) of then-Czechoslovakia in 1983.
It was a close race with 2019 world champion Salwa Eid Naser of Nigeria finishing in third place 0.41 seconds behind McLaughlin-Levrone. Eid Naser owns the fifth-fastest time in event with a 48.14 recorded in Doha in 2019.
