Beri accidentally boarded the wrong Hong Kong ferry and ended up on the quiet island of Peng Chau
Her TikTok of the mix-up, captioned "after 25k steps that was my last straw," quickly went viral
She tells PEOPLE she stayed calm despite a low phone battery and no passport, laughing later that "mistakes are not something bad"
Beri thought she was headed for a short, simple ferry ride back to Hong Kong's mainland, but TikTok couldn't stop laughing at the wrong turn that transformed her night.
Her video captures the exact moment her confusion shifts into panic as she realizes the boat isn't stopping where she expected. "POV: You wanted to take the ferry back to the Hong Kong mainland but ended up on the wrong one," the text overlay on her video reads. Her caption added to the drama: "after 25k steps that was my last straw."
Beri's trip had started with a plan to make the most of her two short days in Hong Kong before heading to mainland China. "I was in Hong Kong, just for a couple of days before I went to mainland China," she tells PEOPLE, recalling how she wanted to see friends and fit in as much sightseeing as possible.
By the end of the day, she was running on empty. "I was so tired and so hungry, so I was like, okay, I just want to go home, take a rest and see my friends," Beri shares.
She hopped on the next ferry without a second thought, confident her Octopus card — Hong Kong's all-in-one transit pass — would get her where she needed to go. "I was just like, yeah, just take the ferry. Where should it go?" she explains with a laugh.
Settling in, Beri called her dad and watched the water slip by. But after 30 minutes, she started to realize something was off. "In my mind, [I'm wondering] why does it take so long? It should go on the other side quick, like after five minutes," she says.
What she thought would be a quick hop across the harbor was turning into something else entirely. "When the board was, like, going off, I realized, like, something is wrong. Like, you could see it in the video, something seemed off," she recalls.

She texted her friend in disbelief. "She told me, 'Well, there are some ferries. They go to some islands, and there are some ferries [that] go to Macau and to some other places.' So I was like, oh, that's bad. That's really bad," Beri says.
Her panic only deepened when she checked her phone. "First, I checked how much battery I had on my phone, because my phone is broken… and I had my power bank with me, but it was already dead because I used it the whole day," she notes.
With her charger useless and the screen showing a dangerously low percentage, the reality sank in. "Actually, that's really bad, because I'm fine if I'm staying somewhere, I will be fine. Usually, I can solve stress very well, so I don't stress myself that bad. But then I realized I didn't have my passport with me. That's the moment where I was like, okay, what should I do?" she says.
Her friend reassured her to just wait, and Beri forced herself to breathe. "I tried to stay calm, because stressing out doesn't help," she shares. Still, the sight of her phone slipping from 15% to 8% left her rattled. "I was really stressed out about the phone, because I didn't know what to do," Beri admits.
When she finally stepped off the ferry in Peng Chau, she was met with darkness and unfamiliar streets. "I have to think about it, actually, because I was so tired and I was just thinking about how funny everything is," Beri says.
The humor helped her process the surreal moment. "I told all my friends about it, like I shared on my Instagram, like privately with my friends, and we were just laughing about it," she recalls.
But the exhaustion dimmed her sense of wonder. "It was really dark, and I was like, my plan was actually to see one of the islands, because I heard it's really nice. And I was just thinking, Wow, [it's] super nice. I wish I could see at least something, or go to the beach there," she says.
She stuck close to a ferry worker to make sure she didn't miss her ride back. "I was just sitting and watching the people come and go. But... on TikTok, when I posted it, a lot of people said it's a really beautiful island. I can tell, like it seemed really calm and people were just walking around, it seemed really nice and calm," Beri says.
What should have been a five-minute ride stretched into nearly four hours. "It should have taken, I don't know, I think, like maybe five or 10 minutes with the ferry and to [get to] my place again, like 20 minutes, 30 minutes. But in total, I think it was like four hours," Beri says.
Even through the stress, she found moments to appreciate. "When I took the ferry, the view and everything was so, so nice. But I was so stressed out, I tried my best just to watch the view and just to enjoy the ocean and everything," she says.

Looking back, she finds herself laughing more than cringing, admitting that she doesn't plan to let it stop her from taking the ferry again. To others, she offers lighthearted advice. "Just take a big breath, deep breath."
"People will help. And don't think too negatively," Beri continues, "I told my friends, like, that's actually a funny joke. By God, I wanted to see the islands, and somehow he took me to one island. I'm trying to see the positive of it."

For Beri, calm is the key to handling travel gone wrong. "I think you can figure out a lot of issues in your life if you just stay calm. Because if we don't stay calm, everything gets worse. And if you just stay calm and tell yourself everything will be fine, everything will be fine," she says.
Despite her original plans being derailed, she eventually made it home. "After I went home, I didn't cry or anything. I just got myself my snacks. I was just sitting in my bed. I was laughing with my friends," Beri shares.
