An assistant principal in Illinois was one of three people killed in a shooting outside a middle school on Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to area officials.

Nerissa Lee, 46, an assistant principal at Lincoln Middle School, died in the incident. Her death was confirmed by Michelle Smith, the district superintendent for the Berwyn, Illinois school, located about 10 miles outside of Chicago.

Lee "lost her life in yesterday's tragic shooting that occurred outside of Lincoln," Smith said in a post on Facebook.

The Berwyn Police Department confirmed the incident in a separate press release. Officers said they saw a man shooting into another car at the school before opening fire on law enforcement at about 4 p.m. local time.

Police said the man then turned the gun on himself and died at the scene. Officials also said that the incident appeared to be "domestic-related," but did not immediately provide additional details.

According to CBS News, apart from the assistant principal's death, Steven Lee, 54, was also identified by officials, as well as a third unidentified person who also died at the scene.

In a later post, police said that Lee's death was deeply hurtful for the community.

"The impact of this loss is felt deeply not only within the school community but throughout Berwyn. Assistant Principal Lee was a dedicated educator and leader who touched the lives of countless students and staff members," police said.

'Didn't come out of the blue'

According to NBC Chicago, Lee's sister, Shana Everage, confirmed that Lee's husband killed her mother and sister before shooting himself.

"I mean it's a horrible thing, you know I have a lot of emotions. I don't quite know what to feel," Everage told the outlet.

Everage also said the shooting was not a random incident, saying that there had been domestic problems for months before the shooting.

"It had started ever since, I want to say the tail end of June," Everage said. "And basically, the boiling point would have been [Tuesday]."
