- The stars and creative team of *It: Welcome to Derry* pull back the curtain on that shocking bloodbath of a premiere episode cliffhanger.

- "The entire story of the season is set in motion by what happens at the end of episode 1," co-creator and co-showrunner Jason Fuchs teases.

- Stars Clara Stack and Amanda Christine discuss filming that intense movie theater sequence: "That was a big shocker."

**This article contains spoilers from *It: Welcome to Derry* episode 1.**

Jason Fuchs, a co-creator of HBO's *It: Welcome to Derry*, has already seen the fans theorizing online around who will or won't survive the first season of the eight-episode prequel series. "But I don't think anyone's expecting so few characters to survive the pilot," he says.

The premiere episode was indeed a bloodbath. The opening scene followed a troubled young boy named Matty (Miles Ekhardt) as he attempted to hitchhike out of Derry, only to find himself trapped in a car with the "It" entity, which took the form of good samaritans, a white Christian family unit. Though the camera didn't show Matty's ultimate fate, the flying demon baby lurching at him, followed by his lone pacifier shooting out of the window, suggest he didn't make it.

By the end of the hour, the death toll climbs significantly. Four years after that opener, Matty's classmates Lilly (Clara Stack), Ronnie (Amanda Christine), Phil (Jack Molloy Legault), Teddy (Mikkal Karim-Fidler), and Susie (Matilda Legault) team up to find out what happened to him.

The five child actors featured prominently in much of the show's marketing campaign, giving the impression that they would form the new Loser's Club. Yet their mission leads them back to the Capitol Theater, where It's flying devil baby form leaps out of a screening of *The Music Man* and devours the children except for for Lilly and Ronnie.

"We love it," Barbara Muschietti, a co-creator on the series with Fuchs and her filmmaker brother, Andy Muschietti, remarks to **. "It's our Red Wedding."

Andy, who directed the *It: Welcome to Derry* premiere, acknowledges, "This is strategically a devastating event to set the audience into that sense of 'nothing is safe in this world.' We kind of trick the audience into thinking that these are the new Losers. Well, guess what? I guess they're all dead."

Like the entity itself, *It: Welcome to Derry* is a show that only grows more powerful by invoking fear within its viewers. The team took their cues from the source material. Stephen King's *It* novel opens in a similar manner with the introduction and then swift death of poor Georgie Denbrough, as seen in the beginning of the Muschiettis' 2017 *It* movie.

The bloodbath cliffhanger came out of a mini writer's room that assembled in secret, consisting of the Muschietti siblings, Fuchs, and Brad Caleb Kane (co-showrunner on the series with Fuchs). In the original pilot script, penned by Fuchs, all the kids lived, and that's the starting point the HBO executives were expecting to hear when the team later convened to pitch the entire season.

"It was a product of that mini room experience where we decided, 'What if *this* happened?'" Fuchs recalls. "So the network didn't know that was going to happen in the context of the pitch. We had a wall with headshots of child actors who would've played the kids in [episode] 101. Andy theatrically stood up as I was pitching. I got to the part where all of them, other than Lilly and Ronnie, being eaten. Andy pulled the paper down, and there was a whole other group of kids [headshots] under there. I'll never forget seeing their faces and feeling like, 'If we can replicate their reaction in the room with audiences at home, we'll have a really interesting, exciting, satisfying way to end episode 1.'"

HBO getting on board with the premiere twist was "a huge relief," Barbara admits, "because we went in [thinking] that will be the fight for us, we're gonna have to fight to keep on pushing the horror and push the jump scares. It was the opposite."

The idea for the demon baby, specifically, came from Andy. Season 2 is set in 1962, within a decade marked by the Cuban Missile Crisis, post-World War II sentiments, the Civil Rights Movement, and the rumblings of the Cold War.

"It was very important to pay attention to the fears of the era," the filmmaker explains. "There was a pretty widespread panic of nuclear attacks and the effects of radiation and mutations in childbirth. There's all these things that I can only imagine what being a child in those years would be like, how your imagination would be spun into horror very fast, not in a good way. Also in pop culture, a lot of horror movies from the late '50s are very tied to the horror of radiation."

So, technically, It's first form on the series isn't a demon baby. "It's a mutant baby that [is] malformed by radiation," he points out.

"That was a big shocker, especially when we got the scripts," Christine remembers of her initial reaction to the material. "We were just like, 'Whoa! *This* is how we're ending things? Okay, let's get into it!' So it was definitely really fun to really endeavor also into my character, being the first time I've witnessed Pennywise and really felt him be present. That ending scene was just iconic. It's a shocker."

The crew brought a giant monster baby head to set for the younger actors to react to, while Andy would make distorted baby noises to help set the scene.

For Stack, the other sole survivor, "Honestly, it was so much fun to film," she says. "Personally, I love filming action-packed horror sequences like that. There were so many cool things about it. I loved learning the blocking of me ducking into the chairs and climbing out and running out with Ronnie and getting drenched in blood and getting to scream and cry. It was all so much fun."

Looking ahead, Fuchs teases, "The entire story of the season is set in motion by what happens at the end of episode 1, this massacre of the Capitol Theater. You'll see in episode 2 the way the aftershocks of that play out." But more importantly, he hopes the shock factor will be strong enough to cut through the media noise and catch the attention of the viewers at home, including those who prefer to scroll on their phones with the TV on in the background.

"We know that we're telling, in some ways, a story that is familiar," he says. "We're going back to a town people have seen, we're going back to a character, Pennywise, that people are now familiar with over the course of two films, and we're gonna have kids in danger. But the question was, How do you then still surprise the audience? How do you communicate that from the very beginning of the season? How do you really pull the rug out from under the audience and go, 'All bets are off, the rules don't apply, anything is possible'?"

The fact that *It: Welcome to Derry* is set in 1962, a time in the Maine suburb that even King readers don't know much about from the original novel, afforded them a lot of freedom. "Not all these characters are canon from the book," Fuchs notes. "We can do some pretty unexpected, exciting things."

*It: Welcome to Derry* episodes will arrive weekly on HBO and HBO Max Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT.**

Sadly for Olivia Jade Giannulli, there isn't a whole bunch of vintage clothes everywhere she looks.

Although she grew up with '80s and '90s star Lori Loughlin as a mom, the influencer, 26, reveals that she didn't inherit many of her "iconic pieces."

That's because "when she was in maybe her 30s or 40s, she did a huge closet cleanout," Olivia tells PEOPLE exclusively of the Full House alum, 61. "She got rid of some of her most iconic pieces. My sister [Isabella Rose Giannulli, 27] and I are devastated, but we'll get over it."

Olivia may not have a wardrobe made fuller with her mom's archives, but she is thankful that she had someone to look up to in the beauty department.

"She's always been really serious about wearing sunscreen," she says of the beauty tips she's gleaned from Loughlin. "I think that's why she looks so good."

The youngest of Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli's daughters was actually on site at the Clarins and V Magazine Golden Hour party during Formula 1 weekend earlier this month. She showed out in a stunning red dress, capturing the essence of the French beauty brand and its popular Double Serum, which gives her a radiant glow along with a "little bit of highlight."

At the event, she also chatted with PEOPLE about her resemblance to her mom when asked about her friendship with Natasha Bure, the daughter of Loughlin's Full House costar Candace Cameron Bure. She jokes that their strong genes are a hard thing to wrap their minds around.

"I think we both resemble our moms a lot physically, so it's weird for people that have watched our moms growing up and to see us as adults," says Olivia, adding, "It's a little trippy."

Since her teenage years, Olivia has been making a name for herself on YouTube, where she posts vlogs, fashion tutorials and makeup routines for her 1.8 million followers. Consider her the internet's big sister.

She's also starred in fashion campaigns, her most recent being in Khloé Kardashian's Good American Fall 2025 ad. "For me, it's the simple moments that feel the most special, just being yourself, comfortable and confident in your own skin," she told PEOPLE at the time.

These days, the Giannulli siblings are navigating a new chapter of their lives amid their parents' separation after 28 years of marriage.

"It's obviously been tough, but Olivia and Bella aren't taking sides," a source told PEOPLE. "They both love their parents and just want them to be happy."

"There's no drama or resentment. They've seen how hard their mom and dad have tried over the years, and they're focused on keeping things peaceful and staying close as a family. At the end of the day, they just want everyone to be okay."

- *A House of Dynamite *premiered on Netflix on Friday, Oct. 24.

- The political thriller depicts the U.S. government's crisis response to a mysterious nuclear missile threat.

- It's ending leaves viewers with more questions than answers.

Kathryn Bigelow returns after nearly a decade with *A House of Dynamite*, a political thriller that will leave your pulse racing and your eyes glued to the screen.

The Oscar-winning director throws viewers into a high-stakes race against time as a single, deadly missile hurtles toward Chicago. A team of U.S. government officials must work together to figure out who is behind the attack (and how to stop it) before it's too late.

The film unfolds in three tense segments, offering perspectives from the White House Situation Room, the United States Strategic Command, and from the president himself (played by Idris Elba).

Below, * *breaks down *A House of Dynamite*'s ending.

What is *A House of Dynamite *about?

*A House of Dynamite* opens with a chilling statement: "At the end of the Cold War, global powers reached the consensus that the world would be better off with few nuclear weapons. That era is now over."

The film's opening act, "Inclination is flattening," then transitions into what appears to be a regular morning at work. Major Daniel Gonzalez (Anthony Ramos) reports for duty at Fort Greely in Alaska, while Captain Olivia Walker (Rebecca Ferguson), a high-ranking officer in the White House Situation Room, begins her day by going over recent developments.

But soon, their typical routine is abruptly interrupted when an unidentified intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is detected. Officials initially assume it's a test, but when the weapon's trajectory crystallizes, everyone realizes that the missile is heading straight toward the U.S.

The story then unfolds across three chapters, each covering the same 18 minutes from a different point of view inside the government. As time passes, pressure increases, communication falters, and every decision carries the weight of potential destruction.

Who is behind the missile launch?

The film never actually reveals who fired the nuclear missile (or even which country it came from), only stating that it came from somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

Once the threat is identified, the military immediately jumps into action. Gonzalez and his team launch two ground-based interceptors (GBIs) at the missile, which is heading for Chicago.

Meanwhile, tensions erupt at the highest levels of command. General Anthony Brady (Tracy Letts), the senior military officer at the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM), urges the president to authorize a counterstrike, but Deputy National Security Advisor Jake Baerington (Gabriel Basso) orders the POTUS to do nothing.

As for Secretary of Defense Reid Baker (Jared Harris), he ignores the national emergency and offers no assistance. Why? Well, he's too busy trying to get in touch with his daughter (Kaitlyn Dever), who lives in Chicago.

Is the incoming nuclear threat stopped?

When Gonzalez's battalion fires the GBIs at the missile, there's a brief sense of optimism. Walker and Admiral Mark Miller (Jason Clarke) are confident everything will work out, even though the odds are only 50-50.

Sadly, that semblance of hope is shattered in the film's second act, titled "Hitting a Bullet With a Bullet." Here, we see the first GBI malfunction and plummet back to Earth, while the second reaches the missile but does not make contact.

This failure hits the battalion *hard*, and many of the soldiers frantically call their families to tell them about the gravity of the situation. For his part, Gonzalez staggers outside and falls to his knees.

What happens at the end of A House of Dynamite?

Idris Elba as the POTUS in 'A House of Dynamite'

*A House of Dynamite* ends on an ambiguous note. In the third and final act, titled "A House Filled with Dynamite," Baker finally speaks with his daughter. She asks for space, they say goodbye, and moments later, instead of boarding a helicopter to the secure Raven Rock bunker, Baker walks off the roof to his death.

In the final moments, the president faces an impossible choice: let the missile hit Chicago, or risk nuclear war by retaliating.

He is whisked away from a charity basketball event to his Air Force One, where Lieutenant Commander Robert Reeves (Jonah Hauer-King) hands him the Black Bag and instructs him to choose which retaliatory strike option to approve.

On the phone, the POTUS recites a verification code to launch a nuclear missile. Those on the other line wait for his decision, but the movie ends before revealing his choice.

"That is the point we wanted to make," writer Noah Oppenheim told Deadline, "which is that even in the best-case scenario, if you had a president who is thoughtful, responsible, informed, deliberative — to ask someone, anyone, to make a decision about the fate of all mankind in a matter of minutes while he's running for his life simultaneously is insane."

The film also never confirms if the missile hits Chicago.

Anime continues to rev up the box office, the latest example being *Chainsaw Man*.

The movie sequel to the first season of the rip-roaring anime series topped the U.S. box office with $17.3 million, bringing its already impressive global total to $108 million.

*Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc*, directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, continues the adventures of Denji (voiced by Kikunosuke Toya in Japanese and Ryan Colt Levy in the English dub), a Devil Hunter who can transform parts of his body into chainsaws.

While grappling with conflicting romantic feelings for both Makima (Tomori Kusunoki in Japanese, Suzie Yeung in English) and a new girl he meets named Reze (Reina Ueda in Japanese, Alexis Tipton in English), the unstoppable Bomb Devil arrives in the city to cut out Denji's heart.

The film's success speaks to the rising popularity of anime in the U.S., especially among younger generations. A study released in January 2024 by Polygon reported that 42 percent of Gen Z watch anime weekly and 56 percent watch it at least once a month, compared to millennials, 25 percent of whom watch weekly and 41 percent of whom watch at least once a month. That popularity is now spilling over into the mainstream.

Earlier this year, Sony and Crunchyroll released *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle* stateside as a direct continuation of the *Demon Slayer* anime's fourth season, and it reigned over the North American box office for weeks. *Chainsaw Man*, also released through Sony/Crunchyroll, reaffirms that instance wasn't a fluke.

"I think it's both the theatrical release itself and the fandom itself," Mitchel Berger, the head of theatrical at Crunchyroll, told ** at the time. "From a theatrical perspective, one of the things about *Demon Slayer* specifically is it feels cinematic. It is a big story that needs to be told on a big screen, and I think that fans are responding to that. The deeper issue is that young fan base — Gen Z, Gen Alphas, and the Millennials to some degree — anime is just an intrinsic part of their personality."

Some of the creators behind *Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc* gathered at New York Comic Con earlier this month to both drum up buzz and speak to how they took advantage of the big screen. "The action scenes are like an amusement park ride. You can just empty your head and enjoy them," character designer Kazutaka Sugiyama said.

"In *Reze Arc*, a completely new genre is born: Love, violence, action, romance, shark," Yoshihara commented. The shark refers to Beam (Natsuki Hanae in Japanese, Derick Snow in English), Denji's ally who can turn into a giant shark-life form with three eyes.

"You can feel the thrill and the tension throughout the action and you can also sense the preciousness of each character through the romance elements," the difector continued. "In *Chainsaw Man*, Devils regain their strength by consuming blood. For *Reze Arc*, every member of the production team offered up a huge amount of blood and, as a result, the movie is bursting with energy."

- EW has confirmed the cause of death for Matthew Cohn, the third Disney World guest to have died this month.

- The Orange County Medical Examiner told EW in an email how Cohn died.

- Two other guests died at the resort earlier in October.

A cause of death has been confirmed for the third Disney World guest to have died on property this month,* * has learned.

Days after EW confirmed that Matthew Cohn died Oct. 23 at the Contemporary Resort just outside the Magic Kingdom park, the Orange County Medical Examiner's office told us in an email Monday that the manner of death was suicide.

Per a representative, Cohn died from "multiple traumatic injuries" at the hotel, with guest-shared video from the scene showing a large emergency response gathered last week near the property's Bay Lake Tower area.

Representatives for Disney World did not respond to EW's request for more information.

While three guests have died at Disney World in October, this marks the second to be ruled a suicide. Earlier this month, Summer Equitz also died by suicide at the Contemporary, a hotel that opened alongside Disney World as a whole on Oct. 1, 1971.

The OCME told EW that Equitz also died from "multiple blunt impact injuries," but stressed that social media reports indicating she died after colliding with Disney World's monorail vehicle were inaccurate.

A similar incident occurred in 2016, after a guest jumped from one of the hotel property's ledges. The hotel includes a unique architectural design, complete with an A-frame build and ledges that face both internally and externally. The interior ledges overlook restaurants, gift shops, and the aforementioned monorail station.

Following Equitz's death, a man in his 60s was found in bed at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

The man's wife reportedly found him unresponsive after 7 a.m. local time, and he was later pronounced dead at 8:26 a.m. upon being transported to AdventHealth Celebration.

On the West coast, a woman in her 60s was transported to a local hospital after riding the Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif.

Hudson started the show's holiday tradition back in 2022, one month after the daytime series made its debut that September

Jennifer Hudson is throwing it way, way back for her daytime show's Halloween special.

Keeping in tradition of The Jennifer Hudson Show's annual spooky season tradition, the EGOT winner, 44, transformed into a "'70s diva" in honor of this year's "soulful celebration" featuring original Soul Train dancers, a surprise "superstar" guest and the iconic Spirit Tunnel transformed into a "groovy dance portal."

Before the "good vibes" air on Oct. 31 with the "Spirit of the '70s" episode, PEOPLE got an exclusive look at Hudson's glittery costume, which features a bedazzled lilac metallic trench coat, hot pink feathers, fabulous earrings and big feathery hair. Her crew members also dressed up in vintage-inspired looks with plenty of bell-bottoms in sight to get into the fun.

Jennifer Hudson rocks a '70s-inspired look for her daytime show's Halloween episode

The Jennifer Hudson Show kicked off its first Halloween taping in 2022 with Hudson dressed up as Whoopi Goldberg's Sister Mary Clarence from the 1992 film, Sister Act.

Recalling her early connection to the sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, in her childhood, Hudson shared: "When I saw that movie, it gave me so much inspiration. That's the power of an icon like Whoopi Goldberg. It helped me create my dreams."

The following year, Hudson channeled another icon in music: Missy Elliott — and this time, she put on a show.

Dressed as the queen of hip-hop — more specifically rocking the rapper's balloon look from "The Rain" music video released in 1997 — Hudson took the stage with a choreographed routine to the hit song.

Her most recent look paid tribute to one of the most iconic musicians of all time, Whitney Houston. She transformed herself into the Queen of the Night — the persona made famous by Houston in The Bodyguard and song of the same name — with a costume mirroring the onscreen ensemble, recreated from head to toe with its metallic bustier, beaded and silver headpiece.

The Jennifer Hudson Show airs weekdays (check local listings).

In the years since, Lovato has leaned into the meme

For Halloween this year, the singer transformed into Poot and posted photos and videos of her costume to Instagram

Demi Lovato brought Poot out of the basement.

To celebrate Halloween, the "Fast" singer revived her 10-year-old viral Poot meme. On Thursday, Oct. 30, Lovato, 33, posted an Instagram carousel showing off her 2025 costume. Poot originated on Tumblr in 2015 when a fan took a washed-out photo of Lovato and created a fictional backstory, claiming it was her long-lost twin sister who had spent her entire life locked away in a basement.

The first photo included the original 2015 snap for reference beside the pop star in her costume, perfectly recreating the look.

She then posed in her garage as if Poot was a scary creature creeping in — even including Poot's ominous shadow. Lovato then followed it up with a TikTok of her pretending to be Poot, screaming for help and trying to get out of the garage.

Her TikToks continued, and she added a video to the ongoing "House Tour" trend, which includes users showing off their homes to the track from Sabrina Carpenter's Man's Best Friend album. The video included Poot showing off all the necessities in her "home," including some bubble wrap, a water heater and her cleaning supplies.

Along with cheeky TikToks, Lovato added another snap of herself posing as Poot, as well as the original photo nestled in her makeup bag.

Lovato concluded by sharing a video of her glam team who helped transform her into Poot as she sat in her makeup chair.

"happy halloween and happy one week of intd!!! been so locked in this era thought i'd let pootvato out 🔒🤍," she captioned the post.

Lovato's husband, Jutes, commented: "Alright Halloween is over everyone. Pack it up. It belongs to demi this year better luck next year."

This isn't Lovato's first time poking fun at the meme. More recently, she included a brief image of the meme in her "Fast" music video, which dropped on Aug. 1.

She also told PAPER magazine in September that she's embracing the memes about her. "An incredible, powerful way to take the power back is to own the memes," she said. "Because then, if I'm laughing, nobody can laugh at me. I'm laughing at me."

Months prior, she joked about the photo on TikTok and lip-synced to a soundbite with the caption, "When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement…"

"Wow, what an offer," Lovato mouthed to the audio. She captioned the video, "And I'm never letting her out."

In August 2023, the "Sorry Not Sorry" singer celebrated her birthday with a cake featuring the photo of Poot.

"When Poot went viral, that actually sucked because I thought that was a real picture of me," she told Harper's BAZAAR in July of that year. "And I was like, 'Oh, no. That's a really bad angle.' But Poot was photoshopped. Later, I felt better about it because I realized that wasn't my face."

"But it was definitely weird when it went viral," she said, adding that "it's really funny to look back on."
