Justin Hartley tells PEOPLE that he and Kathryn Hahn filmed their infamous crotch waxing scene in A Bad Moms Christmas the first time they met

"We shook hands, we introduced ourselves. We've been friends ever since," he says with a laugh

Hahn costarred with Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis in the two Bad Moms movies, movies; Hartley appeared in the 2017 Christmas-themed sequel

Justin Hartley will never forget the first time he and Kathryn Hahn met.

Harltey, 48, recently sat down with PEOPLE for a video interview to look back at some of his most memorable roles across his 20-year acting career. At the start of the interview, Hartley recounted his famous scene with Hahn, 52, from 2017's A Bad Moms Christmas, in which Hahn's character, Carla, waxes his character's crotch.

"Okay, yeah. I remember trying to figure out what the reaction would be," Hartley says as he watched the scene. "We all just kinda thought that a funny reaction would be no reaction at all. And there they go."

"This is actually the first time Kathryn and I met each other, no kidding," he notes with a laugh. "We shook hands, we introduced ourselves. We've been friends ever since."

2016's Bad Moms follows Hahn, 52, and characters portrayed by Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell as three women who decide to let loose to cope with the everyday pressures of motherhood. The holiday-themed sequel, which Hartley memorably appeared in, sees the characters cope with their own mothers (Cheryl Hines, Christine Baranski, and Susan Sarandon) when they visit their respective families for Christmas.

"I forgot about the whole hand-in-hair thing. That's funny," Hartley tells PEOPLE as he watched the scene. "That's actually really funny. I haven't seen that in years, I think. I'll have to rewatch that. Thank you for that, I appreciate it.""Have I been in that situation? No, I've never been in that situation," he adds. "But I think if I were in that situation, I certainly wouldn't react that way. I think I would possibly cry. I'm not a big crier, but that might do it."

Hartley also took time to answer a multiple-choice question related to the scene. "You and your waxist are vibing. What do you do? A - blush and overthink. B - do I keep it professional? They're doing their job, I'm half naked—not exactly the right time to test the waters," he says. "Again, we're vibing. C - YOLO. Maybe you get a date out of it?"

Professional that he is, the This Is Us alum selected choice B. "I don't even know if you could be vibing with a waxist," he said. "I'm sure that's happened before, but they're definitely there to do a job. That's for sure; there's no question there."
