Is Nico Collins playing Week 9? Injury update, return date for Texans WR

The Houston Texans were able to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8 despite being without the services of their top receiver, Nico Collins.

Collins missed the contest while dealing with the after-effects of a concussion. It was the first concussion of the Michigan product's NFL career.

How long will Collins be out because of his head injury? He wasn't able to practice ahead of Week 8, but Texans coach DeMeco Ryans has cast a rosy outlook on the star pass-catcher's chances of playing against the Denver Broncos.

Below is what to know about Collins' status as well as Houston's wide receiver depth chart.

Is Nico Collins playing Week 9?

Ryans implied during an Oct. 29 media availability Collins should soon be able to return to the field.

"Nico is technically still under the concussion protocol," Ryans told reporters when asked about the wide-out's status. "We're expecting him to clear in the next few days."

Ryans did not specify whether that timeline of "the next few days" would guarantee Collins to be on the field in Week 9 against the Denver Broncos.

That said, if Collins is upgraded to full participation at practice on either the 30th or 31st, the 26-year-old should have a chance to return to the field in a matchup against a tough Denver defense.

Nico Collins injury update

Collins suffered a concussion in the Texans' Week 7 "Monday Night Football" loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The injury occurred as he was attempting to catch a C.J. Stroud pass but got tangled up with a Seahawks defender.

As Collins went to the ground on the sideline, his head bounced off the turf. He remained down on a knee following the play before being taken to the blue medical tent for further evaluation. He was later taken to the locker room and ruled out for the game.

Collins missed Houston's Week 8 game against the 49ers because of his injury. He remained in the NFL's concussion protocol ahead of the contest and was listed as a non-participant at each of the Texans' three practice sessions ahead of the contest.

Texans WR depth chart

Collins hasn't been the only Texans receiver dealing with an injury. Slot man Christian Kirk has also missed several games because of a hamstring problem.

Below is a look at the pecking order within the Texans' receiving corps when the unit is fully healthy:

Nico Collins

Xavier Hutchinson

Christian Kirk

Jayden Higgins

Jaylin Noel

Braxton Berrios

Higgins and Noel, two rookies from Iowa State, have seen increased opportunities in the absences of Collins and Kirk. Higgins (6-4, 215 pounds) has played in place of Collins on the outside while the smaller Noel has manned the slot in place of Kirk.

The Texans also have a trio of wide receiver on their practice squad in Quintez Cephus, Josh Kelly and Jared Wayne. Tank Dell remains on the NFI list because of a severe knee injury he suffered last season while veterans Justin Watson and Juwann Winfree are also on the team's IR.
