Conrad (Christopher Briney), Belly (Lola Tung) in 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' -
The penultimate episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty's third and final season brought several major changes to the story for Belly (Lola Tung), Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno)
The series is based on Jenny Han's bestselling trilogy, and the third and final book, We'll Always Have Summer, sees Belly and Conrad's endgame romance unfold differently than it's going to onscreen
The series finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty drops Wednesday, Sept. 17
It's anyone's guess how Belly's story in The Summer I Turned Pretty is going to wrap up.
There's just one episode to go in the third and final season of the Prime Video hit, which is adapted from Jenny Han's bestselling book trilogy of the same name, and as Han, who is also showrunner on the series, has teased, there have been a lot of surprises ahead of the finale.
In the penultimate episode, which premiered on Sept. 10, Belly (Lola Tung) was settled into her new life in Paris and keen to keep her distance from anyone and anything that reminded her of home — and of the relationship she'd left behind.Conrad (Christopher Briney) began writing her letters, which is what happens in the final book of the trilogy, We'll Always Have Summer (though she's studying abroad in Spain instead of Paris in the 2011 book), but there were quite a few changes to how Belly and Conrad's endgame romance comes to be in the episode.

One major change was that Conrad and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) have a heart-to-heart about Belly for the first time. While visiting their mom's grave on the fifth anniversary of her death, the estranged brothers talk for the first time since Conrad's last-minute confession of love spurred Belly to call off her wedding to Jeremiah, and amidst the anger, Jeremiah gave Conrad his pseudo permission to pursue Belly.
In the books, there's no conversation between Conrad and Jeremiah — at least not one that Belly's aware of. Instead, Conrad gives Belly space for three years after the wedding is called off, and he reaches out — via letter — during her junior year.
Another major change the episode introduced was that Conrad is taking things into his own hands and flying to see Belly, presumably to tell her how he feels.
The decision to go is partly a result of his conversation with Jeremiah, partly because Belly finally wrote back to him after months of unanswered letters, and also thanks to Agnes' (Zoe de Grand Maison) encouragement.

Amid the changes at home for Conrad's story, Belly has also been trying something new.
After months of sizzling chemistry, she takes Taylor's (Rain Spencer) advice and goes for it with Benito (Fernando Cattori), kissing him at midnight on New Year's Eve, which sparks a longer romance between them after Belly decides to stay in Paris for another year.
Though Belly emphasized that things between her and Benito were casual since she was planning to return home to the U.S., now that she's decided to stay in Paris for another year, it's unclear where the two stand.
The episode ended with Conrad boarding a flight to Paris, which would see him arrive on Belly's 22nd birthday. Unaware of her incoming visitor, Belly was in the hair salon and ready to start a new chapter for the summer with a haircut before the screen cut to black.

Han, 45, has been hinting to fans that the series' ending won't be exactly what they're expecting since before its July premiere.
She's been open about the fact that she doesn't "like too neat of an ending" and instead prefers a "hopeful one," but she told PEOPLE that the key moments from the book that fans love the most will be included.
"There are a couple of moments that people really love from the books that I knew that people were wanting to see," she told PEOPLE, though she said they "might not always happen in the way that you're expecting."
"I wanted to make sure that I was going to really service those fans who've been following the story for a really long time," she said.
