Is snow a toy? That was a question we found ourselves debating in the newsroom this week. The question was prompted by the white stuff's inclusion as one of 12 finalists to be inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame this year, competing against heavyweights like Connect Four, slime and ... Tickle Me Elmo. A panel of judges will decide which lucky few will win in November.
From The 'Yes, Snow IS A Toy' Camp:
"I firmly believe snow is a toy and a rather multi useful one at that! From building sculptures or forts, to sledding down a hill or having some fun with your buddies with an epic snowball fight...nothing gives you the versatility of snow. You just don't get bored playing with it...cold maybe, but not bored. Even when the white stuff isn't there you draw snowflakes or cut out snowflakes from paper thinking about the next time you can play with nature's toy."
-Rob T.
"Snow as a toy? Yes!!! Think: Sliding. Skiing. And especially — snowball fights! Building snow forts! Yes, there are other ways to have fun, but snow makes these temporarily possible, and that "Do it now or lose it soon" is a part of its endearing quality.
Mind you, there are plenty of things that are far less playful when it comes to snow, such as digging cars out after a heavy snowfall, car accidents, and buildings collapsing after especially heavy snowstorms. Those can be downright humbling, if not heartbreaking.
But as a toy? I'll repeat it here: Yes!!!"
-Michael S.
"I'm writing to wholeheartedly support the notion of categorizing the first snowfall as a unique and special phenomenon, akin to receiving a cherished new toy. The unbridled joy and childlike wonder it evokes are undeniable. Witnessing that first pristine blanket of snow transforms even adults into playful children, eager to engage with its beauty and unique textures. We build snowmen, have snowball fights, and marvel at the transformed landscape. This initial enchantment, however, often diminishes as the winter progresses. The novelty fades, mirroring our experience with toys which, after extended periods of use, may lose their appeal. By March, many of us will likely be longing for the warmer weather instead of welcoming each new snowstorm.
This analogy highlights the ephemeral yet significant nature of the first snowfall. It's a fleeting moment of joy that captures our imagination, leaving behind lasting memories. It doesn't mean we dislike snow entirely, merely that the initial magic holds a special place. Therefore, I believe the classification of the first snowfall as a uniquely treasured, albeit temporary, 'toy' is both apt and evocative."

"Snow Should be All Time Number ONE Toy of All Time.
Wow, what an awesome question. My vote reasons: It can be thrown; Things can be built with it; It can be slid upon; It can be drawn in; We use our imagination with it. Just the question put a smile on my face!!!"

"Snowball fights, snow forts, sledding, building snow people and critters! Ask a bunch of kids how much they love snow, they're the creative ones!! P.s. it may be obvious I grew up in Northeast!"
-Ed
"Snow, leaves and sticks. Growing up in areas of lake effect snow we spent hours climbing, digging and throwing it. Our walk to school was defined by the rugged mountains of roadside snow we had to traverse like lunch box toting sherpas. Cheeks reddened by cold and mittens crusted with the remains of snowballs, we reluctantly returned home.
But there was also autumn, filled with color and wonder falling from the trees. Things to pile up and jump into. Things to bury your little brother under. Acorns to hoard for future defensive weapons. Sticks to ward off the advancing enemies, real or imagined.
Each season brought its innate joys, but fall and winter were glorious."

"To me snow is the winner....... ;-) I'm in South Carolina and to me snow should win this hands down. Have fun in it, respect it and have fun. Smart is the key....... ;-)"
-Phil W.
"Yes, I believe snow is a toy. When I was a kid, I loved to go sled riding, make angels in the snow, and have snowball fights. As an adult, I love its beauty. I love when my dog has zoomies while he plays in it. I love the solitude and quietness of a gentle snow and how it reminds me of God."
-Susan W.
"Your article sparked some thought on my part (the goal of most writers). I whole-heartedly endorse snow as a toy and as a long overdue entrant into the Toy Hall of Fame:
1. Snow has myriad uses for playful activity, including a platform for sledding and skiing;
2. Snow is a useful tool for imaginative creativity, including snowmen, snow forts, snow sculptures, etc.;
3. Snow is "ammo" for snowball fights, which engage participants in healthful cardio activity.
4. Snow has more diverse uses for recreation and play than even Slime or Play-Doh; and
5. Snow has been around longer than any other toy (including ConnectFour) and has greater staying power than other toys, including Tickle-Me Elmo (which I believe had a brief run but has faded quickly with time).
Those points are a summary of my case for snow's induction."
-Jonathan H.
"You can bet on it! My pup loves it even though he is 24 and 1/2 years old! Ever since he and other pups I had in Colorado and here in Kansas- the older one delights in seeing the white stuff!. He will scoop it up into his mouth like a snow shovel and wade through it with joy. Not so much with rain but even the kids I have seen over the years including myself have made snow angels and snow balls and I even made snow cream in the past with the gorgeous white stuff using fresh white snow and adding powdered sugar and some flavoring. The best part of winter is the snow!"
-Yvonne M.
"There's nothing like playing in the Snow! The whiteness, the quietness, and the peaceful blanket of snow turns everything magical. When I go out in the snow, (I'm 64 yrs old), it transports me back in time. All the neighborhood kids are together, running, screaming, playing in the snow! From snowball fights, building snowmen, to sledding down the hill, what a joyous time. So, the answer is, 'YES,' Snow is & was one of my favorite toys."
-Vicky J.
From The 'No, Not A Toy' Side:
"As a former school teacher and Mom, I might agree it can be considered a toy. Like toys Mom ends up cleaning up the mess.
But as a farm kid, snow is absolutely NOT a toy. Back in the 50's and 60's we had some bad snows here in VA. I can remember being brought home by tractor from my grandparents. I remember the tractor they had to hook up to have the energy to run the barn so they didn't have to milk 80 cows by hand. I remember riding on the hood of a tractor to feed the cows with my Dad. I remember my brother having to use a tractor to plow to the main road so the milk truck could get in to collect the milk. Then the next farmer from our lane to theirs so they could have theirs picked up too. And, I remember Dad having to park his truck half way out the lane and walking the rest of the way to the house for supper (and scaring the bejibbers out of me when his face suddenly appeared at the kitchen window over the sink).
Nope, for farmers, snow is definitely not a toy."
-K.C.
"Is snow a toy?... Not in the strict definition. Does it bring joy to kids (and big, wannabe kids)?... Absolutely!!!
This requires additional thought but we probably need a name for things like this, things that can bring pleasure even though that isn't their original intent.
Other such things include bubble wrap, empty cardboard boxes, packing peanuts, rubber bands, Popsicle sticks and string. In the natural world, think beach sand, mud puddles, big icicles and "helicopters" from maple trees."
-Kevin B.
"If we consider snow a toy, wouldn't grass and trees also be toys? Or a house because we play in houses?
I believe snow is an element of weather which allows us to play.... not a toy."
-Peggy F.
"No. Snow is not a toy. It is dangerous. I was hit in the head with a snow ball in grade school and was knocked out. Ouch!!"
-Gretchen
"Nope. If you've ever farmed, delivered lambs and calves, or operated equipment in the snow, snow is not a toy. Generally, toys are considered fun. Adding a layer of snow to almost anything defeats any definition of fun. Now, a beachy, sandy day...that's a toy!"
