Jordin Sparks says her 7-year-old son, Dana Isaiah Thomas Jr., inherited her impressive vocal skills.
On Thursday, Sept. 18, the American Idol alum, 35, attended the Elizabeth Taylor Night of Compassion event at the Beverly Hills Hotel in California, where she spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about her son's musical talent.
The singer admits she's amazed her little boy, whom she affectionately calls "DJ," can hit notes.
"It's kind of cosmic when I'm sitting next to him, and I'll start singing. Then he joins in," Sparks tells PEOPLE. "I'm just like, 'I can't believe that this happened. You're able to do this like I'm able to do it.' "

The "No Air" singer says she and her husband, Dana Isaiah, are considering how they can help DJ continue to develop his abilities.
"So now my husband is like, 'You need to start giving him voice lessons, babe,' " she tells PEOPLE. "I was like, 'Oh yeah. I guess I could do that.' So yeah, we sing all the time."
Revealing their favorite song to sing together, Sparks adds, "Oh, man. When Wicked came out, please. We were singing that high note all over the house."

"I would love to do that, but I am also not one of those people who want to force him to do it because I do it," she says. "If he comes up to me one day and is like, 'Mom, I want to be a singer like you,' then we'll cross that bridge when we get to it."

"Right now, he's kind of exploring everything that he likes, but I'm not going to force him to do what I'm doing because it's a lot to do this, but if he wanted to do, I would be right there for him," Sparks adds.
The "Battlefield" singer welcomed DJ with her model husband, 33, on May 2, 2018. At the time, she told PEOPLE that they were "absolutely overwhelmed with joy."
"He was and is everything we imagined," she added.

Since then, Sparks has given fans a few rare glimpses into motherhood on Instagram. A recent photo showed her and DJ posing on the carpet at the Lilo & Stitch movie premiere.
The pair appeared in good spirits as they greeted one of the movie's lead characters, Stitch, while he was behind the wheel of a pink convertible.
"BEST DAY EVER! The @liloandstitch premiere was so much fun and Stitch zoomed right by us!! I loved getting to experience this with my lil man," Sparks captioned the May 18 post.
