Charmed stars Holly Marie Combs and Brian Krause opened up about late co-star Shannen Doherty's exit from the show, revealing that the situation was even more complicated than most fans know.
During a recent episode of Combs, 51, and Krause's Charmed rewatch podcast, "The House of Halliwell," the co-hosts discussed Doherty's final episode on the drama, "All Hell Breaks Loose," which aired in 2001.
The episode, which served as the season 3 finale, ended with a cliffhanger that showed sisters Prue (Doherty) and Piper (Combs) left for dead as their sister Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) was trapped in the Underworld. In addition to starring in the episode, Doherty directed the finale.
Following the episode, Doherty's character was killed off and she was fired from the show. Meanwhile, Prue was replaced by her half-sister, Paige (Rose McGowan), in the remaining five seasons.
"There was just so many different ways it could have been handled," Combs said of Doherty's final episode. "And the fact of the matter is it was handled so s----ily. It was such massive insult to injury to let her direct it and go out on this high note. Like, it's just so sick and twisted."
Combs went on to say that she wouldn't be "naming names" of the people involved with Doherty's exit because many people are afraid to discuss the situation. She also added that no one knew Doherty would be fired when they filmed the episode. In fact, Doherty got a phone call about the decision when the show was on hiatus.

"Nobody wants to speak their truth because they feel like they'll be hated by the fandom, by the thing, by their former workers," Krause, 56, added.
Krause, who starred on the show as Leo Wyatt, wrapped up the topic by saying that Charmed felt like a different show once Doherty left. Meanwhile, Combs said the season 3 finale was the "worst episode ever" due to the circumstances.
