Since the first season of "The Bear" premiered in 2022 and went on to sweep at the Emmys, its been a hot topic of discussion whether it's fair that the FX series competes as a comedy instead of a drama. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Ayo Edebiri weighed in on the dilemma — or rather, she clarified why she isn't weighing in.

"My feeling is that that is a question that is honestly above my pay grade," said Edebiri, who stars in "The Bear" as Sydney Adamu. "That's a question for the studios. We get asked a lot about it as actors and they don't ask the producer, so that's kind of my answer to that."

To her point, Variety spoke to FX chairman John Landgraf about whether "The Bear" is truly a comedy after it received 23 Emmy nods in 2024, breaking the record for the most-nominated comedy in a single year. "I've never seen a better season of any television series, let alone a comedy, than 'The Bear' Season 2," he said. "Like, that's as good a season of television as I've ever seen. And there are parts of that season that are very, very funny. We let the voters decide the answers to these questions." When asked if he would consider moving the show to the drama category the following year, Landgraf replied, "I'm not focused on that question right now. Just really focused on how gratified I am that the work they did in Season 2 was recognized."

Edebiri won the supporting comedy actress Emmy for Season 1 of "The Bear" in 2023. The following year, she was nominated in the lead actress category, which was won by Quinta Brunson for "Abbott Elementary." Edebiri is up for the award again at this year's ceremony for her performance in Season 3, and is also nominated for comedy directing for the Season 3 episode "Napkins," her directorial debut.
