Harry Hadden-Paton learned the hard way that things made for Downton Abbey stay in Downton Abbey.
Talking to PEOPLE exclusively at the Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale premiere in New York City on Monday, Sept 8, the actor, 44, shares that the movie crew asked him to return a suit he had stolen while filming the series a decade ago.
"I stole a suit that was at the end of the series that they asked back as soon as we did the movie," he reveals. "They were like, 'Can we have that suit back?' "
"And I was [grumpy face], and it was fine because I hadn't worn it in all the time, like when was I going to wear a three-piece suit?" the Twisters actor adds.
"I still have the program from my wedding, Bert and Edith's wedding, which is kind of special," he notes.

Hadden-Paton plays the shy, unassuming, but titled Herbert "Bertie" Pelham, 7th Marquess of Hexham, in the series and various movies. Pelham is Lady Edith Crowley's love interest, and once they married, she became Edith Pelham, Marchioness of Hexham, who then outranked the rest of her family at Downton.
While Hadden-Paton was unsuccessful in keeping his dapper suit, his costar, Hugh Bonneville, who plays Lord Grantham, confessed to Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan on Live! with Kelly and Michael in 2016 that he stole several props from the set.
"I did liberate a letter from a character called Henry Talbot [played by Matthew Goode], who really emerges quite clearly in season 6, inviting us to race a car or something," he told Ripa and Strahan.
He also took another prop used to propel the show's dramatic developments. "The telegram from season 1 announcing that we were going to war with Germany," he added to the list of stolen goods.
Downton Abbey will close out the beloved upstairs-downstairs franchise with a third movie, titled Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. In addition to Hadden-Paton, Carmichael and Bonneville, the film will star Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Joanne Froggatt, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Lesley Nicol, Dominic West, Penelope Wilton and Paul Giamatti.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale follows the Crawley family and their staff as the future of Downton is left up in the air, facing their fears and the future together.
