An interview from 2012 is going viral online because Reddit users are in awe of actor Martin Short's "masterclass" on how to "be a classy, generous" public figure.

In the clip, Short was a guest on The Today Show to promote a movie, and during the interview, host Kathie Lee Gifford asked Short about his marriage to Nancy Dolman. Short and Dolman were married for 36 years and shared three children. But Dolman sadly passed away in 2010 from ovarian cancer, two years prior to this interview.

"You and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business, how many years now for you guys?" asked Gifford.

Short is visibly shaken in the interview, but he graciously says, "We… married 36 years."

Gifford then says, "But you're still, like, in love!", to which Short replies, "Madly in love, madly in love."

On Reddit, fans cannot believe the way Short handled the situation.

"I've seen this clip a few times, and it's a complete masterclass from Marty on how to be a classy, generous public figure," wrote one commenter.

Another added, "He didn't want to embarrass her or make it awkward so he just went with it and took the chance to talk about the woman he loved. A class act."

"Navigating grief by filtering your answers to questions if you aren't quite ready to deal with the emotional response in that moment. Martin just did it so effortlessly in that clip," wrote a third fan.

A fourth fan added, "The way he handled the moment makes me even more sad 😭😭."

Gifford, of course, was informed of her mistake and apologized on air afterward, saying, "I felt so badly for my question. Marty very kindly came up to me and told me what I had done, and I want to say my sincerest, sincerest apologies to him and to his family for not realizing what I was doing on live television."

She also wrote on X (then Twitter), "I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful."

In an interview with E! News at the time, Short said he knew Gifford made a mistake and there was nothing malicious about it.

"On live television, people make mistakes. There's no ill will intended. It's nice to aspire to be kind of elegant," said Short.

Dolman and Short were together from 1972 until her death in 2010. She had a recurring role on the sitcom Soap before retiring in the mid-1980s to be a full-time mom to their three children. The couple shared children Katherine, 41, Oliver, 39, and Henry, 36.
