For Max Kessler, being compared to Adam Sandler has been a running theme since childhood — then the comparison worked in his favor.

The 32-year-old content creator spoke with PEOPLE on August 8, and explained that people started pointing out his uncanny resemblance to the comedian when he was just 8 years old. Though Kessler admits he "was more into sports" than films growing up, he still found himself watching Sandler's biggest hits — and imagining what it might be like to meet him one day.

That dream came true in 2016, thanks to a coincidence. When Kessler saw the trailer for Sandler's film The Do-Over, he noticed the comedian's character shared his exact name — Max Kessler. "What are the odds of that?" he recalled. Amused, he posted about it on Reddit, and the post quickly gained traction. The buzz eventually reached Sandler himself, who invited Kessler to the film's premiere.

On the red carpet, the two finally came face-to-face. In an interview, Sandler jokingly introduced Kessler as the "younger, sweeter, better version of me." For Kessler, who had never met the star before, the moment is ingrained in his memory. "I was super nervous because he's one of the best — if not the best — comedians and actors of all time," he said. "But it was a blast. It was probably one of the best moments I've had."

Years later, Kessler assumed his brush with Hollywood was behind him, but that changed when he was approached about becoming a body double for Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to Sandler's 1996 cult classic. "But then I got a message that's like, 'Are you interested in a body double role?'" Kessler recalled. After submitting an audition and working through golf and acting lessons, Kessler stepped into the surreal role of playing a younger Happy Gilmore. With Sandler and actress Julie Bowen offering support and guidance along the way, he crushed the role and got to appear alongside some of Hollywood's biggest stars like Bad Bunny and Travis Kelce.

Looking back, Kessler says seeing himself in the film's credits was a surreal payoff. "Seeing yourself in the credits, you're just like, 'Wow,'" he shared. "This is just bonkers." He also revealed that his family back in Massachusetts held a watch party when the Netflix film came out on July 25.

Kessler has since returned to his corporate day job, but as for more acting gigs, he says he's "open to" more in the future, and has already amassed quite a following on social media.
