According to reports, it struck a wall about 15 feet away from the NFL coach's desk, though no one was injured
The team and local police believe that the shooting was a "random" act of violence and that no one was specifically targeted
A bullet was fired into the office of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in May 2024, and it came within feet of his desk while he was there working.
Reid was working late at his office located in the NFL team's practice facility on May 4 when the bullet was fired, according to Kansas City Star. A police report provided to PEOPLE by the Kansas City Police Department said that the incident occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m.
"When officers arrived they were told by overnight security that someone in the building alerted them to hearing a noise and observed what appeared to be a bullet hole in a window," a spokesperson for the police department told PEOPLE.

The shot was fired from outside and pierced a window in Reid's office before landing inside a wall between the bathroom and his office door, according to Kansas City Star. It's reported that the bullet came within 15 feet of the coach's desk.
The building was hit by two other rounds during the incident, per USA Today. One bullet was found outside in an air conditioning unit, while another "hit the floor above [Reid's] office."
"No one was struck, and there were no injuries associated with the incident," the spokesperson for the police department told PEOPLE. However, the case is being investigated as aggravated assault "because the building was occupied at the time of the bullet coming through the window."

There have been no arrests or charges, according to police. The investigation is ongoing, and "detectives await further forensic analysis" to determine things such as "where the bullet may have been fired from."
"Based on investigation to this point there is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization," police said.
A close insider told USA Today Sports' Jarrett Bell that the incident is believed by the team to be have been "random."
The shooting was reportedly kept under wraps; however, USA Today reported that additional safety measures were taken, including the installation of bulletproof windows in Reid's office.
The investigation remains ongoing.
PEOPLE contacted the Kansas City Chiefs for comment but did not hear back at the time of publication.
